When one enshrines a work under the title masterpiece it becomes trapped along with those who play it within a framework of rigid iron. The work is unable to evolve with changing culture, it becomes relevant only to those that wish to put on airs. Art music has become limited and even more pretentious than it originally was.

Canonical works weren't selected exclusively on the merit of the pieces. Instead they were chosen by rich patrons, who mostly focused on name recognition. The works of classical composers recognized in canon are now status symbols for the intellectual. All other work is considered low brow.

I spoke of the problem with canon, however equally problematic is viewing the canon outside of historical context. Which is to say a world conquered by a group of nations in a geographically advantagess location. This group like nearly all other tribes in history was patriarchal. And like every other conqueror they had little interest in the cultural contributions of conquered peoples. Viewing the works of the "Genius Composers" outside of this context would lead people to perpetuate the inequity for no better reason than simple ignorance.

{Women and African Americans “are underrepresented in fields whose practitioners believe that raw, innate talent is the main requirement for success.” }

Befitted the modern first world perspective that civilization exists in spite of rather than as a result of men, I am now going to quote an bashing my sex for making more popular music.

" I was taught to be suspicious of the pervasiveness of the "pseudo-generic man" — the assumption that a male perspective can stand for all perspectives. Today, myriad identities across the gender spectrum flourish within our shared social media spaces and the conversations generated there. Yet in popular culture, and especially in music, the pseudo-generic man still rules. "
