S - Supernumerary time for you to learn something new in order to pass your proficiencies.

P - Protected learning time.

O - Organised by you.

K - Know your scope of practice.

E - Ensure you have made notes - This will help you write a good reflection for your portfolio.

PLT Information :

7.5 hours a week, you can have PLT in your hub as well as in other areas of the trust as long as you are learning something new.

Unfortunately at times due to service demands you may need to rearrange your PLT as Patient care comes first and we need to maintain safe staffing.

PLT OTJ hours in your HUB

You don't need to do a spoke to get PLT OTJ hours recorded. You can shadow an RN or RNA, complete a ward round and medication round, gain a new skill, work with the MDT on your HUB. How about engaging in a conversation where you develop new learning, this is also PLT. Utilise your HUB for the knowledge and experiences that will enable you to develop your role and prepare you to qualify as a Nursing Associate.

You can also use PLT to book onto training whether this be E-learning or face to face sessions. Keep an eye out for conferences and talks from specialist groups such as Safeguarding, Learning Disability Nursing etc. Your Practice Educator will also put on teaching sessions periodically.

Catherine was an SNA with Bolton University and completed the Top Up with the Open University. Catherine has recently graduated with a first class honours and has secured a band 6 secondment in ENT Eye OPD.

Sister Clare

Clare is now a sister on ward 27. Clare was an SNA with Bradford and then conquered the OU Top UP. Since then she has become a student advocate alongside being an NA ambassador and has completed the professional nurse advocacy training. YELLOW BADGE

After successfully trialing the yellow badges on ward 26 and 27 we have now rolled this out to the rest of the trust. Yellow Supernumerary badges can be collected from Jess B and they should be worn for PLT and placement hours. This enhances awareness of your role and should improve the learning experience. For Nursing Associates:

You must have CSU/line manager and matron support.

You must not be on a formal stage of sickness and have good attendance.

You will submit an application within the trust and to the Open Uni online.

You will need to attend a virtual interview and if successful you will commence the course in October.

You will need to do a credit transfer from your NA course.

Information for your manager

You will need to do 770 placement hours over 3 different placements. These are split as 250, 250 and 270. Your final placement is in your HUB.

You will need 7.5 hours a week for studying. Lectures are mandatory and are often on an evening.

The course is 20 months.

You will need to have tripartite reviews.

What will I study?

K210, K325 and K326. Management, leadership, medicines management and in depth nursing knowledge and skills.

You will have exams, essays and a portfolio/pad to complete along with 3 placements.

For Top UP your join the RNDA course
