Significance of Music

The Great Gatsby is written and set in the Jazz Age. Francis Scott Fitzgerald wisely uses Jazz music to set a tone. Songs are used to represent the overall mood of that said moment or character in the novel. There is an overwhelming atmosphere that is conveyed through the music because of the depressing mood set by the characters. Fitzgerald only adds in short bits of lyrics, but chooses them wisely. Music is referenced throughout most of Gatsby's parties. Francis also uses music to portray a certain feeling of longing when Daisy is present in the story.

Ain't We Got Fun by Van & Schenck- Jazz

"One thing's sure and nothing's surer
the rich get richer and poor get---children.
In the meantime,
In between time----"
The song is referenced in Chapter 5 when Gatsby is showing Daisy his house. It is a turning point in the story because Gatsby finally has Daisy in his hands, and is attempting to impress her. Nick catches the scene as lively and exciting. For example," It was the hour of a profound human change, and excitement was generating on the air..."(Fitzgerald 95). The song represents a situational irony because of the lyrics. It talks of being poor but having fun when Daisy had initially rejected Gatsby because of his poverty. The lyrics talk of having fun regardless of the situation which foreshadows the affair between Gatsby and Daisy.

Love Nest by Louis Hirsch- Musical

"But the best one of them all
Jack built long ago
Just a love nest
Cozy with charm
Shall we build for pride
Warmth and love inside"
This song plays after Gatsby orders Klipspringer to play the piano for them. Fitzgerald writes,"When Klipspringer had played The Love Nest he turned around on the bench and searched unhappily for Gasby in the gloom"(Fitzgerald 94). The lyrics sends a message of deciding between security and pride. "Shall we build for pride" represents a situation in which Daisy leaves Tom to live a happy life with her true love Gatsby. The song portrays the dilemma Daisy faces. She has Tom on one end that is publicly supported and secure while Gatsby could provide a more intimate relationship. The song is used to reinforce the love triangle and what each man has to offer.

Three O'Clock in the Morning by Paul Whitman- Jazz

"It's three o'clock in the morning
We've danced the whole night through
And daylight soon will be dawning
Just one more waltz with you"
Tom and Daisy went to Gatsby's party and as they walked out with Nick the song played. For example, Nick said," Her glance left me and sought the lighted tp of the steps, where Three o'Clock in the Morning, a neat, sad little waltz of that year, was drifting out the open door"(Fitzgerald 108). Just earlier in the story Daisy and Gatsby had danced. Nick was surprised by Gatsby's gracefulness. The song plays a significant role in the story because it is late in an eventful night. Daisy had a great time at the party and had the opportunity to spend time with Gatsby. The lyrics are powerful and represent the Jay's longing to be with Daisy. He would kill for one more dance(Waltz) with Daisy. Fitzgerald entered the song to emphasize the rekindling of love between Jay and Daisy. It reinforces the intimate yet saddening mood of the chapter.

" So you're still thinking of me
Just like I know you should
I cannot give you everything
You know I wish I could"
This song directly correlates to the younger years of Daisy's and Jay's unforbidden love. Jay was just a young soldier without much money to his name. He was madly in love but lacked security that Daisy needed. Young Dumb and Broke correlates to Love Nest because it is a confession of ones love. The song conveys a mood that appeals to intimate emotions. As much as Gatsby wants to be with Daisy, she can't bypass social norms such as a woman finding a man that can support her.

Last Night by P. Diddy- Contemporary R&B

"Last night, I couldn't even get an answer
I tried to call, but my pride wouldn't even let me dial
And I'm sitting here with this blank expression
And the way I feel, I wanna curl up like a child"
There is a correlation between this song and Three O'clock in the morning. Both talk of reminiscing in the night before. After Gatsby had Daisy at his party, his feelings had only grown deeper for her. They danced and this brought out a side of Gatsby that no one had seen. Nick even spoke of how graceful he was and was astonished. It would definitely set a mood of some type of loneliness that still has a sense of hope because of what had transpired the night before.

When I was your man by Bruno Mars- Pop

" That I should've brought you flowers
and held your hand
should gave you al my hours
when i had the chance"
Bruno tells a sad story with this song. He talks of what he should've done when he had the chance with some woman. His lyrics that talk of providing for this woman also apply to Gatsby. He was never in a position to provide for her and that is why she left him. She wanted something that Jay didn't possess so she moved on. Bruno didn't give enough to his girl in the song, and she is said to have moved to someone that will take care of her. The mood is very sad and heartbreaking because these men are being left behind by woman seeking more. It's like the irony of Ain't we got fun that talks of poor people lacking opportunities and happiness.
