The required medium for this project was cardboard. I got my idea from ripping the cardboard so the only the bottom layer showed. I thought that doing this made it look like there were clouds in the cardboard so after I ripped up parts of it, I worked back into it with watercolor and added a pop of color with oil pastel. The object of this piece was to commemorate 9/11. I added an element of emphasized verticality to try to show that the lights of the 9/11 memorial extend across the world and not just in New York. The lights function as a double message. This piece is a continuation of the work I've been doing with European cities and architecture. This particular piece is a small mountain-side village in Amsterdam. I think this piece is a little flatter than I would've preferred so I will probably work back into it later on. This teacher-initiated project was inspired by an African photographer who specializes in showing the living conditions of African children. I twisted the subject to try to portray growth. The two kids int eh picture are meant to be the same and I wanted to show the progression of the child in his facial features and positioning under the blanket. This piece was different for me due to the fabric element. I've never tried to draw fabric before: I've only ever painted it. I tried to show the various folds through small, detailed circles that I varied in shade. This piece was one of my more involved pen and ink pieces. I think it shows a lot of my development compositionally as well as my progress with shading and fading. Like the piece above, this is also in Amsterdam, but the building style was a bit more intricate. The curvature of the tops of some of the buildings was difficult because of its complete deviation from the classic Chicago-style skyscraper. The triangle roofs were also very different and it was fun to experience some of the European culture through drawing while still being surrounded by American architecture.

This piece was primarily a figure study and a deeper look at facial features. I set out to give the girl I was drawing an intense, focused expression as opposed to the bland facial expressions that have been in some of my previous pieces involving people. I wanted to show emotion, and it was difficult to manipulate the shape of the eyes and mouth in order to achieve that. I was also working with a lot of shading in the collar bone area and the parts of the face hidden behind the piece of hair.

This piece involved a lot of experimentation with various mediums and one of my first real pieces involving ink. I used a paintbrush with the ink well and I was surprised by the smoothness of the strokes and the effects that they could create. I liked the depth that the look of the bold ink could make when contrasted with the small pen detailing in the trees in the background. These two smaller pieces were part of a set that I may want to explore later. The quick, small strokes are an effective way to test colors and see what blends well together. Both pieces were interesting compositionally and it was hard to work with the space and try to fill it without putting in too much paint. I tried to do opposite colors in both the two pieces separately and within each one. This piece was inspired by the flowers and colors I saw throughout the botanical gardens. This was my first time ever using oil pastel and the way that it blends is completely different from using any of my regular mediums. This was one of the large-scale 4x4's. Since we weren't allowed to use paintbrushes, I used my fingers and a cotton ball to get the details on the owl. The background was made up of the effects that the house paint made when it dried. I thought that the intricacy of the texture in the background was nicely offset by the smooth acrylic paint, especially the paint in the branch underneath the owl. This piece was a mixed media observational drawing. I haven't been doing a lot of observational drawings lately and I wanted to improve that skill. I'm still working with composition in observational pieces. I used the white in this piece to highlight and contrast, which worked especially well against the blue background and black detailing.

This piece was inspired by an exhibit in the field museum that involved examples of ancient Korean artwork. I connected a lot with this subject and the relationship between this kind of art and my heritage. I used a paper that I bought in Korea that is specifically used for scrolls. I also researched techniques used to make this kind of art and pulled from pieces I saw in the field museum. I tried to incorporate my own style as well, but I struggled a little bit with the unfamiliar water color medium. The paper also ended up warping more than I would have liked but delving into the Korean culture was a fascinating experience.

The inspiration for this project came from "Q13". When I think of the letter "Q", first thought is of a queen. I have always been a big fan of Alice and Wonderland, and especially with the art associated with it. I decided to use the Queen of Hearts as my subject, and the "13" is incorporated into the piece through the 13 roses surrounding the young queen.
