Tanner Park is different from other parks since it offers more than just playgrounds and green areas. This beachfront park is perfect for boating, fishing, and taking in beautiful water views because it grants access to the Great South Bay. It also has sports fields, a dog park, a marina, a beach area, and even a summertime spray park for kids. Additionally, it often holds events and concerts, which is something that not all parks do.

General rules such as no littering, picking up after your animals, and no smoking or drinking are permitted in the park. There are signs that deny people access to the water due to the fact that it is contaminated. Due to the diversity of the community, all of the signs have multiple languages written on them. Making it easier for everyone to understand the rules. The off-written rules set for the park are just to respect those around you and the environment around you.

In general, Tanner Park welcomes a wide variety of guests regardless of their age, ethnicity, and family background. The park usually consists of parents watching their children play in the park. The sports teams range from little leagues to adult leagues. There was a wide range of Dominicans, who made up most of the community population. The area also ranges for all ages, given the variety of activities located in the park. 

The supervision of the local government, park employees, and security guards all show authority at Tanner Park. Signs, employee presence, and surveillance are used to enforce rules and procedures, especially if any major events were to occur. The decision-making authority for park programming, finance, and maintenance also rests with local government representatives, which is the town of Babylon.

I spend a good amount of time at the park; I feel like before this project, I mainly saw it as a place meant for my siblings to play sports. It is a well-maintained area with a well-respected community overall. There haven’t been any major issues, and I think it is filled with a family-based community.

Walking research helps us understand spaces by experiencing them firsthand. Springgay and Truman show that walking isn’t just movement—it reveals how places affect people differently based on identity and accessibility. In Tanner Park, for example, walking research could show how people use different areas and interact. Instead of just observing, walking lets us truly engage with and ask critical questions within the spaces we move through.
