According to the poem, it states, “I smiled, touched her shoulder, and led her across the street…” Because of this, it can be inferred that he is enjoying his time with her since he smiled. When he touched the girl’s shoulder, this could be a sign of affection and love, meaning that he is happy to show that he is affectionate towards the girl. As for him being nervous, lines 30-34 demonstrate how he is nervous. According to these lines, the poem says, “I fingered a nickel in my pocket, and when she lifted a chocolate that cost a dime, I didn’t say anything…” These lines reveal that he is nervous because he stayed quiet when the girl chose a chocolate that he couldn’t afford. He didn’t want to say or do say anything to disappoint her, and this is what was causing him to be anxious. If you love someone, you want to go above and beyond for them, but when you fail to do that, you feel disappointed. The poet feels happy because he was able to go on a date with his girl and he is in love. I know this because in the text it says, ”at her gloves, face bright with rouge. I smiled.”This shows that he was happy because he was in love and he could tell that she was happy.
The poet was also nervous because he didn’t have enough money to buy her candy. I know this because in the text it says,” I fingered a nickel in my pocket, and when she lifted a chocolate that cost a dime, I didn’t say anything.”  This shows that he was nervous because he was fingering with the nickel and then the girl picked up a candy that was ten cents which means that he didn’t have enough money to buy the candy for her. He still wanted to make her happy so he put an orange on the counter with the nickel and the cashier knew what was going on and accepted the orange as a payment. He was able to make her happy while him also staying happy while he was on the date with her.

The poet feels that way because he is with his lover. In lines 32-38, the poet stated “And when she lifted a chocolate that cost a dime, I didn’t say anything. I took the nickel from my pocket, then an orange, and set them quietly on the counter.” in this excerpt, the poet gives up one of his own oranges that he could have kept for himself to sell for his own money or eat, and sold it so the girl could get the chocolate she wanted, showing his love. Also, in lines 47-50, the poet said “I took My girl’s hand for two blocks, then released it to let her unwrap her chocolate.” In this piece of the text, the poet refers to the girl as “my girl” which shows the two are in love. All in all, these two statements made by the poet show that being with his lover has caused him to feel in love.

At the beginning he is nervous and happy for what is coming on. This is shown through the beginning of the text when it says, “The first time I walked with a girl I was twelve, cold and weighted down.” The end of the quote is really shows the part about the poet being nervous. When he talks about being cold and weighted down that is showing that he is nervous because when somebody is weighted down with something it means that they are nervous about what is going on. So that is how the poet shows that he is nervous. A few lines later it talks about when he is happy, it says, “A dog barked at me until she came out pulling at her gloves, face bright with rouge, I smiled, touched her shoulder and led her down the street.” In that quote it says that the poet smiled and when people smile it is a sign of happiness. By smiling he is showing that he is happy by being around by the girl. Then at the end of the poem the poet is starting to feel sad that his time with his girlfriend is over. This is shown by when at the end of the poem he is starting to describe the outside as the horrible thing. In the poem it says, “Outside, a few cars hissing pass. Fog hanging like old coats between the trees.” Compared to at the beginning when it the text the outside is described as, “Her house with the porch light that burned yellow night and day.” And,”Newly planted trees.” This shows that the poet is getting sader by the closer his time gets with the girl by when he starts using words and phrases like, cars hissing pass, and fog like old coats hanging. These words have a negative connotation compared to at the beginning of the poem when he is with the girl and he is using words like, porch light that burned yellow, and newly planted trees. These words have a positive connotation to them. So at the beginning when he was with his girlfriend time is good and he is enjoying himself and then when the time gets to an end he is getting sad that he will have to leave his girlfriend.

THis is probably because it is first date. Which would cause anyone a lot of nervousness.

In the text one thing that shows that he is nervous is 
“ The first time I walked with a girl, I was twelve, cold, and weighted down.” The poet is saying that he is weighted down which is another way to say that he is nervous. Which would make sense because of the fact that he is on his real first “date” and is having his first real relationship. With that comes a lot of apprehensiveness. There is multiple actions that show he is prideful one of them says in the text “ I smiled, touched her shoulder, and led her down the street.” As well as, “ I took my girl’s hand in mine for two blocks…” The poet certainly has to be prideful with this girl because he wouldn’t just touch her shoulder and smile at her and lead her down the street if she wasn’t important or something to be proud of. Also with the fact that he is holding her hand you can tell he cares about the girl a lot and if he cares for her that much, so he is definitely proud and joyful to be around her.

The poet of “Oranges” had different emotions throughout the poem. In the very beginning he felt in love and happy. He says “She came out pulling at her gloves face bright with rouge, I smiled”. This action is showing that he really likes her. The fact that he smiled when she came out of her house shows that he likes her. When  people show a smile that means that they like you as a friend and sometimes more than a friend. He is not only in love but also happy, happy to see her. Whereas in the middle of the story he is anxious. He takes her to a candy shop and tells her to pick out anything and when she does he can’t afford it. “And when she lifted a chocolate that costed a dime, I didn't say anything. I took the nickel from my pocket, then an orange, and set them quietly on the counter.” This shows that he is anxious that the lady won’t accept his nickel and the orange. He has nervousness and worried that there will be a bad outcome from this. In the end however he was Happy. He was happy that the lady accepted the nickel and the orange. He is also happy that “his girl” as he calls her is happy. I know this because in the poem it states “When I looked up the lady's eyes met mine, and held them, knowing very well what it was all about” This shows that the lady will most likely accept the orange and the nickel. ALso it says that “I took my girls hand In mine for two blocks” This is showing that he is happy too because he is holding her hand for two blocks and he is also in love and when you are in love you are most likely happy. If someone is weighted down, it means something is making them nervous. The poet used the metaphor weighted down to express that he was nervous the first time he walked with a girl. Later in the text he says, “I smiled, touched her shoulder, and led her down the street,”.Smiling indicates someone is happy about something. Therefore, when he smiled at her and led her down the street, it shows he is happy to have her with him on his walk. Both pieces of evidence show how the poet felt during the time period he was describing. The first piece of evidence shows he is nervous and the second piece of evidence shows he is happy. The poet of Oranges feels two opposite feelings at the same time, nervous and happy.

He also feels happy and wants to spend time with her. He doesn’t care that it is a bad day. The newly planted trees symbolize the new beginning love they feel towards each other.
