Allow him to create a My World or Body map or Timeline depending on what the problem is. Be aware of any language and communication barriers. Be aware of the timings and dynamically choose to do the assessment over 2 sessions. This allows for other provisions and resources to be gathered/created that are more Ashley specific and visual.

I found this resource for explaining CBT where you begin by defining thoughts and feelings using picture cards. Then together with the client you separate them into a 'heart pile' and a 'thought pile.' The therapist then brings this together by telling a story which illustrates the connection between the two.I think this would be helpful for client such as Ashle y who presents with anxiety as it means the attention is off him, and on a task. I would probably also offer Ashley the choice of having Mum leave the room during the activity if this made him more comfortable.

Group 1. Lay off the questions a bit - maybe start by playing a game (board, cards etc.) or drawing. Offer Ashley some things to do (fiddle toys, maybe playdoh) while the assessment is going on so he has something to occupy his hands (might help him feel more able to talk). Acknowledge that this might be difficult with Ashley, but see whether he'd be ok for Mum to leave the room for a part of the assessment - try and gauge how well he's responding with Mum present. It might be important to bring this up with Ashley at the start of the session and be clear about when it might happen so that he isn't worrying about when it's going to happen throughout the session.
