Mauna Loa's last recorded eruption was on March 25, 1984. About 16 square miles of land were paved over by the 1984 flows. The lava flow stopped just four miles short of the coastal town of Hilo as residents packed to evacuate. There were no deaths involved in this eruption.

In addition to flood basalts, Mauna Loa's caldera emitted a noxious mixture of fumes called volcanic smog. This smelly gas is a combination of sulphur dioxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide. These pollutants caused probable lung degradation and threatened respiratory function, especially in children and asthmatics.
