In the video I chose the teacher used various examples of formative assessment. She explained that in the beginning of the year, she and the class developed a rubric. She provided modeling and student examples for students to view and know what the expectations were. The teacher had the students do a practice demonstrating what the lesson covered. They were able to discuss, share and explain the significance of what they were doing with each other. She also used the cross-curriculum approach.
Another way that the teacher was able to use formative assessment to engage all learners and check their progress was through giving a writing assignment that would be turned into a play. The students would discuss the writing. They would do a read through and discuss how to improve the performance. Then as a finished assessment the rubric was used to grade the writing and performance of the story.
Other formative assessments that can be used through asking questions and having students answer using white boards, thumbs up/thumbs down, and randomization.

I might utilize UDL practices to reduce obstacles of learning and increase engagement in the classroom by first identifying barriers my students may have. When thinking of the assignments I will want to give students multiple choices to express their knowledge keeping in mind that the process is more important than the finished product.
I would provide alternative seating and positioning allowing the student to adapt their position to give them the most enjoyable experience of creating. I would also allow students to rearrange materials, try various materials so they can create different textures and looks.
I would make options available for students to engage in the creative process and in the expression of what they created.

I watched the dance/poem video. The teacher used lots of observation based on the criteria he had given to assess students. He mentioned that he also jots down information he gathers on each student as he is observing. He also involved students in co-creating criteria on what makes a great dance. They made a checklist that was referred back to as students created their dance. As he was questioning the class, he could have used randomization (choosing sticks with student names on them) to involve more students and get a good idea of who is understanding the concepts.

I was excited to see UDL as a topic in this module. This is a practice I have been learning about and researching on my own and plan on implementing full force next year in my class. I am currently reading "UDL Now" by Katie Novak and am excited for the changes I will be making next year. To implement UDL, I plan on first starting one lesson/subject at a time. I will develop routines using UDL and then transfer what I am finding successful in that subject to the next subject. The first way I plan on implementing UDL is simply by providing students with more options and choices to show their understanding of a topic. I plan on working on pacing guides this summer that focus on the standards being taught, not the lessons, so that I can plan UDL lessons with an objective related to the standard in mind.

In the lesson portion of the activity, the teacher watched the students as they did self checks on anchor charts. She made sure she had the information to refer back to if they had any questions about what was expected of them. She watched them use the different symbols of the native american culture to create their stories in their art work. She could walk around and hear the students discussing their projects and listen for the correct use of the symbols. Finally, they were able to write their own legend and act out the plays they wrote. They even had a lesson that was learned at the end of the play.

I appreciate the gentle nature of assessment in the Native Woodland Arts video. It was a "how are you doing today?" kind of check in. The instructors, elders, and invited guests sat with each student on a 1-on-1 basis and asked inquiry questions to better understand what the student was trying to express through their art. That opened a gateway for mentorship.
