• The two types of racism I have seen in this world are Institutional and Cultural Racism. The examples of slide 3 that I have witnessed in this world is Structural Racism. I believe racism has been expressed more once Trump took office.

• I found most unique about the black families is kinship care. This is in relation more during the enslavement times which kept families together and continued onto the modern times in kin networks within the African American communities.

• I think the strengths of black family is staying United as a family regardless of the circumstances. By having the support of the family they are able to adapt. The challenges of a black families is raising children and educating them on the possibilities of discrimination of their cultural background and or skin color.

• The concepts of racial socialization affect parents for the purpose to protect their children from harmful racial discrimination and teach them pride of their cultural identity.

• The factors that have impacted black families since slavery are financial hardships, limited access to resourced and education, as well as ongoing racism and discrimination. The impact of slavery and discriminatory practices has created a complex web of inequities that continue to shape the lives of Black families.

The three points that help me understand this topic are

1.) The slave states of the South entered into relationships that they treated like marriage but their unions were not protected by state laws.

2.) Enslaved people lived with the possibility of separation through the sale of one or more family members.

3.) The use of unpaid labor to produce wealth lay at the heart of slavery in America

• I learned from the unit reading was the meaning of ‘jumping the broom’ the practice ritual done by slaves as a wedding ceremony or unity. I found this interesting after learning it is still done in current events but never knew the meaning behind the name.

• Imposter syndrome is a psychological condition when individuals get out there, achievements and successes.

• Imposter syndrome affects students in the their educational journey, because it decreases confidence and increases self doubt.

• Imposter syndrome affects the self-esteem and African-American women in the workplace because it gives them anxiety, depression, impacts mental health, takes away ability to move towards growth.

• Racial and gender play into African American women’s experience in the workplace because it causes fear of advancement of women of color in the workplace by perpetuating racial stereotypes and discriminatory outcome.

• One thing that I learned from reading this unit was that imposter syndrome is a real thing. My spouse suffered from imposter syndrome but didn’t understand the factors behind the condition.

• I believe the racial microagressions are the psychological consequences of experiencing subconscious racial slights of a color.

What stereotypes are perpetuated when racial microaggressions are thrown around towards a person of color?

• The stereotypes that are perpetuated with racial microaggressions are threatening those of color like foreigners asking “where are you from?’. Another stereotype of racial micro aggressions can be the lack of intelligence towards color people.

Considering Intersectionality, what other issues does this theme affect in the African American community?

• The intersectionality that also affect the African American community are violence, LGBTQ discrimination and mental health.

• These theories intersectionality, racial microaggressions, bias can affect those by questioning one’s self worth of belonging. Also having to worry of being evaluated due to their race to fit in society.

• I believe a successful strategy to address Michael aggressions would be confrontation. This will give the victim the opportunity to express their feelings and possibly stop further discrimination.

• The one thing that stood out to me in this unit is the overall concept of microaggressions based on life personal experiences and bias against my race and how I can handle situations differently in a less aggressive manner other than be so offensive.

• The strengths of Black neighborhoods and communities are resilience due to the history of discrimination and racism and community networking which provide emotional support and resources. The manifesting of these strengths include federal programs and policies as well as systemic inequities, education.

WEAKNESSES: What are the weaknesses of Black neighborhoods and communities and state one solution to an issue you have raised?

• The weaknesses of Black communities are the racial segregation and crime rates due to continuous violence with no impact for change. One issues that I have raised and personal experiences was mental health. However, being employed by a county funded program. Clients were able to obtain free mental health services.

OPPORTUNITIES: What are three ways in which Black neighborhoods and communities could play a role in the progressive movement of the Black community?

• The three ways Black neighborhoods and communities can play a role in progressive improvement are civic engagement which will have residents involved in local elections, supporting local businesses to help the economy, and advocating for policy change to raise awareness and demand change.

THREATS: What are three ways in which Black neighborhoods and communities could have a detrimental effect on the progressive movement of the Black community?

• The three ways Black neighborhoods and communities have detrimental effects on the progressive movement of the Black community are negative stereotypes which can limit opportunities, limited access resources which can lead to a cycle of proverty, and internal divisions which make things difficult to trust and cooperate with each other.

This builds trust and makes mental health resources more accessible and safe environments.
