Originally from Augsburg, by the end of the 15th century they were already among the leading merchants in Europe. Their rise to prominence came with Jakob II, who, among many other things, financed the election of Charles V as emperor. His son Anton was the official financier of the emperor and Philip II, who granted him commercial concessions and a share of the profits from the gold brought from America; by the mid-16th century, he was the richest man in the world. It was on this very street that the Függer or Fúcares family had their Madrid home.
