A cathedral ceiling is defined as a symmetrical ceiling whose two sloping sides meet at a ridge in the middle of the room. The slope of a cathedral ceiling is generally the same as the slope of the roof of the building.
A vaulted ceiling consists of a self-supporting arch between the walls and roof. It does not necessarily follow the pitch of the roof. Therefore, it can have uneven sides, depending on the style of the vaulted ceiling. While a cathedral ceiling matches the roof pitch, a vaulted ceiling sits below it.

Coffered ceilings are a very classic architectural detail consisting of a series of rectangular, square, or octagonal grids in three-dimension sunken or recessed panels," says Camp.
