Knowing the cultures is very important. Knowing this information is a way that teachers can help students feel loved and welcomed. I need to learn all of the cultures in my classroom. Building relationships with students will help this process. I need to as the teacher be able to provide the students need in order to feel apart of my classroom. For this class we read a book called, Culturally Proficient Instruction. Over the last 8 weeks I have read chapters in this book that goes over what educators need to know in order to be inclusive. This book emphasizes the importance of building relationships with the students in the classroom and the impact it has.

Below is a video of the important of building relationships

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzvm1m8zq5g

YouTube.

Early in this class we had to do an assessment on Biases and Stereotypes. There were a couple of assessments that we had to do in order to determine if we were biases. This was eye opening for me. Unknowingly we all have biases and draw conclusions. The results of the assessment showed this in myself. It was very eye opening for me. This is something that teachers need to be mindful of. As the leaders of the classroom when can not create biases and stereotypes. We were given many recourses on how to identify biases.

Christian University in Ohio. MVNU.
Privilege within our Students

There can be times when people think that because of their life that they have privilege. There have been times when I have seen this within schools and classrooms as well. One the reading from the course was all about privilege. Laura Willard says, “Privilege means that some of us have advantages over others for any number of reasons we don't control — like who we are, where we come from, the color of our skin, or certain things that have happened in our lives” (Christian University, 2025). As a teacher I feel that we need to keep thing neutral in the classroom. I do not feel that it is fair to students for them to witness privilege. There are going to be times that students will need extra support within the year. I need to be well equipped with resources for my students. I need to be mindful of what I do in my classroom. I do not want my students to see that I treat any student differently.

https://mvnu.edu/Understandingprejudice.org. UnderstandingPrejudice.org.
Colorblindness

In one of the articles it talked about colorblindness. I really enjoyed reading the perspective of the article. It really made a point on how people have been reacting in regards to saying, “All lives matter”. This has been something that has been taking place in the world lately. I feel that as an educator I need to know what is going on in the world and the impact that it can have on my students. I feel that sometimes it is easy to become numb to the things that are happening that would affect our students. Something I feel is that it is easy to pick a side and to judge others for what they are choosing to support. It is easy for us to judge or to change phrases to fit what we feel is best. The article says, “But we still say it. We say it because “All Lives Matter” lets us get back to feeling comfortable. “Black Lives Matter” makes us uncomfortable. Why? Because it reminds us that race exists. It reminds us that our experience as white people is very different from the experience of Black people in this country. It reminds us that racism is alive and well in the United States of America” (Halstead, 2016)

YouTube. (n.d.-a).
Poverty

How does poverty effect students at schools?

One week during this class we talked about poverty and how it can have an impacts the students in the classroom. We need to educate schools and teachers about poverty and how it affects students. Education is key. Poverty can affect the students more than we would think. Kozol used his book to explain this to people. He used his experience to educate others in stories. He believes that all students need to have an equal opportunity to education. Kozol says, “We ought to finance the education of every child in America equitably, with adjustments made only for the greater or lesser needs of certain children. And that funding should all come from the collective wealth of our society, mainly from a steeply graduated progressive income tax” (Kozol,1992). He sees the importance of education. He feels that children should all have the same opportunity to have a successful learning experience. Even if the families are not commuting the struggle with their kids, they see, hear and know what is going on. They can sense the stress and carry this with them as well. It saddens me to see the impact that poverty is having on students. The article said that it is only getting worse. “Today, low-income students are four and a half times more likely to drop out of high school, and even those who are academically proficient are far less likely to complete college. The gap in SAT scores between wealthy and poor students has grown by 42% in the last two decades. And financial stability has become less attainable even for college graduates, with only one-third of adults under 35 forming independent households” (Birdsong, 2016). Reading this stat is sad to me. I wish that educators would realize the impact that poverty has on our kids. We need to be the change and advocate for them. To build relationships and mentor them at this time. This article was from 2016 so I would be interested in what this stat would be now.

YouTube. (n.d.-a).
