Ephriam was a normal boy living a normal life. Then, his father suffered from a stroke. His mother, father, sister, brother, and he moved to Crystal Springs, Maine from Cambridge, Massachusetts. 
His home is now the Water Castle. It's called the Water because his ancestors made a fortune there selling water. Ephriam meets Mallory Green, and Will Wylie, whose families are pulled into the Water Castle's secrets. For example, Ephriam hears a humming sound in the Castle, and when he follows it, he sees a flash, well, more of a glow of blue light. Then it disappears.
Also, legend is that the Fountain of Youth exists on the Water Castle's grounds. When Ephriam learns about the fountain, he thinks that it will cure his father, and make him less frail.
