1991 - End of Cold War

In late 1991, the Soviet Union had collapsed following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989-1990. The Soviet flag was replaced by the new Russian tri-color flag. This marked the end of the Cold War with the Soviet Union, and the victory of the Democratic United States.

George HW Bush 1989-1993

George HW Bush took initiative during the cold war and took several different actions to reduce the chances of nuclear warfare. During his presidency he signed the START (Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty) which agreed to reduce the amount of nuclear weapons between the USSR and the U.S. Bush worked to strengthen ties and promote alliance through initiatives like the Gulf War Coalition. He also was an important figure in forming the NAFTA, which goal was to improve ties between Canada, Mexico and the U.S making trade between the three easier.

Ronald Regan 1981–1989

Ronald Reagan had a huge impact on the Cold War, he implanted many policys against the USSR including military buildup, economic assistance, and carrying out policys of containment. He created ties and proposed negotiations with the USSR. He proposed the SDI as a missle defense system against the USSR which placed pressure onto the Soviet Union which eventually lead to the complete collapse of the USSR.

Reagan wanted to restore the U.S. economy. His ideology was that the economy would improve if citizens had more money to spend. His four main points were to cut down on government spending, lower income and capital gains tax, reduce regulation by the government, and reduce inflation by controlling the money supply. This created a short term boost in the economy in the 80s, but started to cause problems in the 90s.

In 1986, Reagan met up with communist leader Mikhail Gorbachev in Reykjavík. The meeting was made to have talks about dismantling their nuclear weapons. Reagan was notorious for his positive talks with Russia about world issues. Unfortunately, the peace talks between the two superpower leaders fell through and Gorbachev backed out. Gorbachev tried convincing Reagan to take down the Strategic Defense Initiative, but Reagan denied him. In 1987, Reagan delivered a speech in West Berlin, with one of the main points being "Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall".

Trickle Down Economics

The trickle down economics theory states that tax benefits and breaks for corporations and the wealthy individuals will "trickle down" for everyone else. It involves less regulation and tax cuts for those who have high-income tax brackets.

Stagflation, 1973-1982

Stagflation happens when high unemployment, slow econonmic growth and high inflation happen all at the same time. People find this extremely difficult to handle, because if you try to fix one you can make the other worse. It has occurred repeatedly in the modern world since the 1970's.

Clinton's Impeachment, February 12, 1999

Bill Clinton was impeached because he lied to the American people. He had relations with one of his secretaries, and when he was asked about the controversy, he denied the allegations. He ended up avoiding the charges and remained in office for the rest of his second term.

Iran Iraq War, 1980-1988

Iraq invaded Iran over political and border disputes including the tension of the Shatt al-Arab waterway (both countries claimed the territory as their own), the war is to be considered as one of the longest wars in the 20th century spanning over the course of 8 years. The conflict ended in a ceasefire in 1988. Leading up to the way in 1979 the Iranian Revolution played an important role in the War. It was the Iran leader being overthrown which caused tension between the people and the new government.

Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, 24 December 1979 – 15 February 1989

In 1979 the Soviets invaded Afghanistan to promote the spread of communism through the Middle East and Europe, the soviets were also concerned about the spread of Islam as a religion. It was a brutal war and Afghanistan was very against the invasion so resistance groups like the Mujahideen who were supported by the United States. The war left the economy in ruins which eventually led to the rise of the Taliban.

Clinton's Presidency: 1993-2001

The terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 happened because members from the terrorist group Al-Qaeda hijacked three planes and flew them into Both the twin towers, the Pentagon in Washington, and farm land in Pennsylvania. This event killed and injured thousands and started the war on terrorism.

Election of 2008

The election of 2008 held significance in the fact that social media was heavily involved and held influence never seen before in an election. They had an African-American run for president (the American people have never had an African-American in office as president before.) With the conclusion of the election, Barack Obama, the first African-American was elected in 2008 as president of the United States.

Down-sides of Obamas Presidency

From his election in 2008, Obama led the fight against terrorism throughout Middle Eastern countries, such as Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. For the next ten years, American troops were fighting a battle that was already won with the death of Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, and the dispersion of other terrorist cells. Despite the US's undisputed victory in the Middle East, many American lives were lost and people started to become enraged that American citizens were fighting a war that was already won. All throughout the was, there was an uncountable amount of war crimes committed against not only enemy soldiers, but also innocent women and young children. Much of the atrocities committed were hidden from the public until after the US pulled most of its troops out of the Middle East. Obama gave many orders for drone strikes on supposedly "terrorist safe houses" that resulted in the death of thousands of innocents. Despite Obama's mostly overwhelmingly positive presidency, he was still responsible for many deaths that could have been prevented.
