Your first Task - "The Origins of Photography Essay"

1000 - 1500 words 

Within your essay you will explore the invention of photography, where it started, key inventors including 

• Joseph Nicephore Niepce

• William Henry Fox Talbot

• Louis-Jacques-Mande Daguerre

Reflecting on how these practitioner formed photography as we know it today. Along the way you will need to discuss and analyse their practice and images. 

Deadline 11th October 

Part 1 - Aperture - 

• Create Mood Boards of Examples of Wide and Narrow Apertures.

• Add a definition for what wide and narrow aperture is.

• Research a photographer and analyse their work for an example of each wide and narrow aperture.

• Evaluate your best example of both wide and narrow use of aperture.

Part 2 - Shutter Speed - 

• Create Mood Boards of Examples of Fast and Slow Shutter Speeds.

• Research a photographer, analyse their work for an example of each. 

• Produce a range of images Exploring each Technique. 

• Shoot Plan (detailing what youre going to do)

• Risk Assessment (available on padlet under resources)

• Contact Sheet - Must Annotate

• Evaluate your best examples of fast and slow shutter speed. 

• Shoot Evaluation (what went well, what would you do better etc)

- Explain each element for Formal Elements and Elements of Composition

- Research an example artist for both Formal Elements and Elements of Composition (pick an artist that uses one of the elements in their work... think colour or texture etc)

- Take photos of each element for both.

Peer Feedback / Digital Crit

• Identify Edward Weston - Photographer to Research and Analyse example of their work. 

• Plan and produce a shoot inspired by your researched influencer photographer. - Dont forget to tell me how they will be inspiring your shoot, Where you will shoot.... How, When ect. 

• Produce a annotated contact sheet. 

• Evaluate your process...... 

• Identify Brassai - Photographer to Research and Analyse example of their work. 

• Plan and produce a shoot inspired by your researched influencer photographer. - Don't forget to tell me how they will be inspiring your shoot, Where you will shoot.... How, When etc. 

• Produce an annotated contact sheet. 

• Evaluate your process...... 

• Darkroom Health and Safety 
• Research and explain what a photogram is. 
• Research Man Ray  and Robert Davies in addition feel free to research a photogram photographer of your choice. 
• Create a mood board of different photogram images.

• Produce at least 1 photogram
• Describe and reflect on your process. 
• WHO, WHAT, WHY, WHERE, WHEN AND HOW

• Label the photoshop workspace

• Identify and Label adjustments and layers in photoshop

Part 2 - Digital Manipulation -

Double Exposure -

• Research Jessica Hosman or Christoffer Relander and 1 double exposure photographer of your choice. 

• Produce your own double exposure image- (Workshop) - Have two images to collate ready. (Layer Masking)

• Evaluate your process. 

• Research Both Manipulation / Surreal Photographer - Aziz and Cucher (Portrait) and Erik Almas (Landscape) - As well as one of your own .....

• Explore cut and paste - select and move (Lasso, Quick Selection, Transform)

• Create your own digitally manipulated Portrait or Landscape photograph. 

• Evaluate your process. 

Introduction to Documentary and what it is and the subject areas you can explore.

Part 1 

• Research 2 Documentary Photographers 

  
  

• Research one film photographer either portrait or landscape style. 

• Plan your shoot for the 35mm (Bare in mind the film is in Black and White) 

Part 2 -

• One role of film within groups. 

Part 3 -

• Develop the film in the darkroom 

• Create a contact sheet in the darkroom 

• Create One print each in the darkroom 

• Write up the steps for the process in the darkroom

• Overall Evaluation of your process

• Discuss and research into what colour theory is and how colour can be used to impact and change images.

• What are the different elements of the colour wheel.

• Research a photographer that uses a lot of colour in their work and how this impacts their images. (William Eggelston)

Part 2

• You will be given an emotion and you need to think about how you can combine this with colour.

  
  

• With this you will produce a photoshoot showing how you can combine your emotion with colour and how they can work together to create a message behind an image.

  
  

• Evaluate your process of this shoot.

  
  

• Partake in a group critique around the images.
