How are library media specialists perceived by themselves and their fellow colleagues, principals, students and others in their community?

How LMS have been perceived over the years has changed so much and yet not at all.

Within our own world, the 21st century LMS are very much aware of what the expectations are and what is possible with technology but the reality is that we are just not there yet.

In a study of 100 LMS, Anne McCracken found that school LMS experience multiple barriers in carrying out their expected role as laid out in the most recent literature:
-lack of time, including lack of time to plan with teachers
-lack of adequate funding
-lack of interest and support of classroom teachers
-use of a fixed schedule
-lack of clerical staff
-too many schools or students to provide for

There is a huge gap between expectations and standards and what is actually possible with the time and resources made available to LMS.

Coming in short of this ideal often creates a rift between among staff. Teachers often think that the job of LMS is too easy and therefore isn't respected.

The LMS has the added responsibility of really putting themselves out there to support teachers and students in a way that doesn't add to the workload but makes it more efficient, exciting and meaningful.

I am very excited to be working through this program while working as a librarian in my elementary school under a DSAP. I was surprised to learn that that the position of LMS was a shortage area however, after being in this position only a few short weeks and researching the path this position is taking, I understand why. This job is not for the faint of heart.

The previous librarian held the position for many years. There was no library curriculum in place and the roll-out of technology was very slow-moving. In my new position comes new responsibilities. I am currently involved in writing curriculum that highlights information literacy and digital citizenship as well as working with teachers to incorporate meaningful (and time-saving!) technology.

It is a very exciting time.
