Born in Philadelphia on April 7th, 1915, though Holiday’s childhood was spent in Baltimore where she grew up in poverty. Her father was drafted in World War 1 and was sent to Europe where he suffered lung damage from inhaling poisonous gas. Billie's mom left her with her relatives for some time while she went to New York to seek better wages. When Billie became a teenager she performed at Nightclubs to start her career in a way. Holiday Faced many jim crow segregation at hotels, theaters, restaurants, and bathrooms. She also had to put on special effect makeup to make her look lighter to be able to play with a band and in front of an audience. She also had to put a red dot on her forehead to make her look east Indian to avoid finding a segregated hotel room. Billie also had a reputation for alcohol and drugs so she ended up actually having to go to prison. Though it was only for a short period of time. Billie Holiday’s last performance was on May 25th, 1959. Not long after this event, she was admitted to the hospital because of heart and liver problems. Sadly Billie died July 19th, 1959 at the age of 44.
