Mental illness and Social Media kind of go hand in hand, from people claiming that social media has cause the great boom of mental health awareness to people pointing out how mental health seems to be decreasing, wellness wise, from the rise of social media. I do believe that while social media has helped mental health awareness spread, it has also been a leading factor in the decline of people's mental health. From hating your body because of false Instagram models to hyperfixation on Youtube trends leading to a depressive spiral, social media seems to not be holding mental health to a high standard.

Suicide is a sensitive topic and I'm not here to try and assess that every suicide attempt from a youth/young adult is related to cyberbullying, but I am here to suggest that there might be a greater relation than we assume. Research suggests that peer victimization is a large factor in how many teens are having suicidal thoughts/ideation and I think that shows how cyberbullying is effecting people. If you're being told that constantly that you kill yourself, eventually you'll start thinking that you should.

Effort gained from diligent, time-consuming work is slower to access the reward system, while checking Snapchat or Instagram causes a rush of dopamine that provides immediate gratification. Recurrent checking behavior can be likened to smoking a cigarette, which floods the dopaminergic pathway quicker.

With the rise of Social Media, came the rise of anti-social social interactions. Where you sit on your phone and message your friends without actually being able to tell what their doing, where you don't actually have to be social. This new form of interactions brought up a new idea for the harms of social media, the threat of extreme loneliness. Loneliness, in itself, isn't directly harmful, but in large quantities for long periods of time, it can become dangerous to your mental stability. Loneliness is one of the signs of suicidality for a reason, and it can cause suicidal ideation. I mean, one of the most sterotypical reasons for suicide is "no what would even realize I'm gone" and you would think that no one would realize your gone if your lonely enough.

To sum up my thoughts, while I don't believe that Social Media is bad nor do I think we should delete it, but I do believe that we should acknowledge and just to adjust around the harms of this media. I do believe that we can make social media a well-rounded helpful space, but with all these harms to our emotional and social health with the chances of anxiety and depression disorders, suicidality on the rises and cyberbullying becoming a fearful topic, I don't know if that will ever truly happen. Despite all of that, I do want to see Social Media Platforms change as we, the consumers, make sure to keep the platforms accepting and welcoming for the upcoming generations and I do want to start implementing things to improve mine, and others, time on our, so well loved, devices.
