I believe this part of the story reflects the textbook that says "Collaborative decision making involves many members, many views and many approaches and hence better decision making" (Making Healthy). We wanted to do what was best for her and what would be emotionally healthy for us. They didn't really blame me for not wanting to put her down, as I loved her so much.
