History of the Zoo

It began with a bear 125 years ago. The beginning of the Denver Zoo dates back to 1918 with the opening of Bear Mountain. This was a the first American institution adopt Carl Hagen beck's groundbreaking zoo concept, allowing visitors to view animals at eye level in natural habitats, free from bars or fences.
