Student discourse occurs when students are engaged in meaningful discussion about a particular topic. The discussion should involve students' ability to think critically. When they listen to what their peers think about the topic, they may gain a new perspective or at least broaden their own. In my opinion, talking about reading critically is a cornerstone for building better readers.

Student discourse gives students the opportunity to practice academic language. The video by Mayer stated, this could be done during "timed pair share", "random reporter", and "teacher led discussions". All of these activities help students clear up misconceptions and build on prior knowledge. This creates a deeper understanding for students. Ultimately, this will increase student achievement by restating and clarifying students' ideas, when using"academic language" and "academic discourse".

Discourse can help students acquire academic language and increase student achievement because they are able to converse with their peers and get a variety of perspectives on academic language and on the text itself. One student may have more background knowledge than another, which means he will likely have stronger academic language of the subject at hand. By sharing this through discourse, students can assist each other and help address weaknesses. In the video, we were able to see the students engaging in specific conversation pertaining to the text. The teacher acted as a facilitator.

Student discourse can help students acquire academic language and increase student achievement by allowing students to share ideas, opinions, and language with each other as well as receiving explicit instruction on the academic language that will be used that day. According to the video, the teacher may explicitly teach the academic language necessary for that day and also let students share either their own answer or a partner's which leads to an increase in self efficacy, ultimately leading to an increase in student achievement. I think this is great because students know that their ideas and thoughts are valued in the classroom; they also gain a deeper understanding of the text by engaging in discourse. Overall, student discourse is a critical part of everyday instruction in order to see student achievement rise.

Student discourse allows the student to apply concepts taught within the lesson. It brings clarity to the objective(s) and enhances their comprehension and vocabulary. In the Internet video, (Mayer, n.d) states that, "to engage students in discourse setting the level the expectation is key for students and modeling as well. The process allows them to share their ideas and learn from each other." That explains the accountability of students during this particular process for each pupil. That said, student discourse allows the student to voice their understanding and work together to buiuld comprehension that will create an environment that is conducive to learning.
