Twain wrote this story when the Jim Crow laws suppressed the voices of the African American people. The story takes place during a time where slavery hadn't been abolished yet. Twain works to expose racism doesn't just affect the victim but also the offender. The raft represented real freedom and a place where anyone is welcomed and accepted. The rules of the raft were that everyone deserves the same respect and support. People followed these rules making it a "safe" place. Huck and Jim see the river was they're path to freedom. To Jim the river is his path to the free states and for Huck it's his path away from his abusive, alcoholic of a father. The reader is reminded of Huck's age which explains why he does some of the things he does. Though he grew up without a lot of supervision he is smarter than many of the adults he sees every day.
