This is a well known public memorial honoring those who died in the Vietnam war. The Vietnam war was one of the most important and controversial events of the 1900s. The young people of America protested sending American citizens to die in the jungle for a war that they shouldn't have even been involved in. Vietnamese people protested America's involvement, the innocent civilians dying, and the inhumane manners of warfare being used. This memorial is very popular, and is visited by around 5 million people each year.

The 54th Massachusetts Regiment had a huge impact on racial equality. Originally Black Men were not seen as proper soldiers. They would be ignored and sidelined even though they helped a lot in the war. When these men gave their lives in the battle of Fort Wagner, they got the proper recognition they deserved and would convince others that black men d deserve to be a solider just as much as any white man.

They were all incredibly dedicated to the movement, and were a pivotal part of the approval of the 19th Amendment, which gave women the right to vote. A statue of all of them can represent the hard work and passion that they put into the movement.

I am nominating the Martin Luther King memorial to my landscape because it honors one of the greatest social activists ever with his peaceful ways, but also honors the Civil Rights movement. Martin Luther King was one of the most influential members of the Civil Rights movement, getting arrested many times and speaking out about the imbalance of rights against blacks during a time where it was risky. MLK fought for all black rights peacefully, being compared to the likes of Ghandi with how he acted. MLK was the face of the Civil Rights movement for a period of time, giving the famed I Have a Dream Speech where he talks about how one day everyone will be equal and live peacefully and many other famous quotes that are used today. MLK however, was more than just a key part to the Civil Rights movement, but was also an influence for many with his attitude and fearlessness when fighting for rights. Because MLK had so many famous quotes, these were applied to other areas of life, one example of how he has been remembered past the Civil Rights movement. This memorial's design features MLK being separated from a mountain of despair and depicts MLK as a stone of hope that was born from disappointment. Because MLK was so important to the Civil Rights movement and was more than just an activist, I would have this memorial as one of the first ones you see. MLK was an important man and somebody who should be honored and remembered for their work, even past the Civil Rights movement. I am nominating the MLK memorial because it commemorates a great activist and also honors the Civil Rights movement.

I am memorializing Alice Paul because she was THE X factor which resulted in taking back their right which was promised by the constitution. Alice Paul was a very important pioneer in the Womans movement particularly to gain the right to vote. She was a driving force which shaped Womans rights today. Paul was born in New Jersey and the oldest of four. Following her studies at Columbia University she lived in England where she found her passion for Womans rights. Paul became the leader of the (NAWSA) chapter in D.C. and organized numerous protests and demonstrations. Paul astoundingly assumed the role of a suffragette which was a attempt to demean and discredit her work. Paul most famously led several woman in a hunger strike in jail in 1917. Many women were violently force fed. These actions were highly criticized by the media and gained public attention. By 1918 woman were given the right to vote(19th amendment). Countless women lobbyed for exchanging "given" in "given the right to vote" to "took their right to vote" as they were constantly criticized, marginalized, and assaulted for demanding their rights.

The National Memorial for Peace and Justice

I am nominating the National memorial for peace and justice because it memorializes the lynchings that happened during the Jim Crow era and commemorates the people who lost their lives. Lynchings were present in the South from 1882 to 1968, with over 4,000 happening and being used to punish blacks for crimes that they were accused of. Lynchings made it so blacks were constantly oppressed, with many communities coming together to do them and sometimes police officers who claimed they were enforcing Lynch Laws. Although lynchings were prominent in the South and something blacks constantly had to deal with, they are not often commemorated and this memorial does that. The memorial used over 800 steel monuments that each have one county a lynching occurred and the names of the victims of that county on them. These monuments then hang together, creating the memorial that remembers the dead and the gory time in history. Because of this, I am nominating the National Memorial for Peace and Justice to my landscape because of its memorialization of lynchings.

I am nominating the Wright Brothers monument because it represents a huge growth in innovation by flying a heavier than air machine, but also commemorates their relentlessness for success. The Wright Brothers were the first people to fly a man made machine, heavier than air, to get up in the air by itself and move forward without losing control. This machine represents a big point in innovation, as the plane allows people to travel much further distances easier and more efficiently. However, the brothers worked for many years on the machine and failed many times, another quality that should be remembered, as it was not easy and took a lot of work to achieve. The monument's sides are covered with wings, representing a bird that is gearing for take off and has an inscription commemorating the Wright Brothers and their great achievement. Because the plane was a groundbreaking invention and one that is under memorialized, I am nominating it to my landscape because it helps us remember their historic invention and brave attitude.

For my memorial I would have three women like in this photo with similar signs and have them marching. I would want this action for my memorial because marching is one of the most powerful peaceful protests and should be acknowledged through this memorial.

I am nominating the Statue of Liberty because it represents the freedom that the people of the US hold, as well as the abolition of slavery that gave blacks their freedom as well. Freedom is an inalienable right, but slavery prohibited it at one point, making blacks property and allowing them to be owned by people. Freedom is something that is often taken for granted, but the US allows people to have freedom in many ways, whether it is religion, speech, or other things. As a result, the statue, which is named after the Roman Goddess Libertas, makes her a worldwide symbol of freedom. The statue also represents the US moving on and abolishing slavery and making all races free, with her right foot, torch, and broken chains representing the freedom gained after abolition. Because the Statue of Liberty represents the freedom in America, something that is not often memorialized and honored, I am nominating the statue of Liberty to my landscape.
