Hi everyone, my name is Martina, I'm an Italian Primary School teacher. This is my first experience at school and I absolutly enjoy it. I work in a school in the cuntryside of Parma (you may know this city for the good food and culture!). Outside the city you can really feel how immigration is changing the background, in my class of 22 I have 7 italian students, and a mix of students from East Eurpean Countries (especialy Romania, Moldova, Bulgary...), North and Central Africa, and also China and Syria. Diversity is a key word in my class, that's why I believe intercultural knowledges and tools are essential nowadays.

This means often they can understand nothing of Italian language. In my school there are students from 11 to 13 years old. The current Italian law requires that every teacher (not only humanities teachers!) is able to approach literacy of foreign students attending our schools. So, this year, over the curricular lessons, we face Italian literacy classes (L2) with some foreign students. These students come mostly from China, Egypt, Philippines and Sri Lanka.I already attended a short course of Italian for foreigners, but I would like to study in deep this skill. So I expect to learn more communication strategies that can be spend in this kind of situations. Good work to everyone!P.S. Excuse me, but my English is not so good! I hope you can understand me anyway!

I have been teaching for several years to small groups of foreign newly arrived students. I taught them Italian as a second language and participated in several courses about diversity, migration, racism and inclusion in Italy and abroad.

Hello, I'm a teacher of a Primary school in Giffoni Valle Piana( Salerno), town known for its Festival del Cinema per ragazzi. This year I teach English only to Italian kids but in my previous school, in Emilia Romagna, I had a lot of students from foreign countries such as Senegal, Morocco, Romania, Philippines and China. It was a bit difficult but at the same time stimulating. It was for me and the whole classroom a good experience, both cultural and personal. English language was often an effective means to communicate each other before they started learning Italian. So I'm interested in improving my intercultural competences.

Here we have classes with 40 to 70% of foreign students, so we have to cope with cultural diversity in its various aspects. I'm an Italian Teachers Maria Grazia. I live in Catania in Sicily (Italy). I teach technology and computing in three third class of primary school. I am the digital animator of my school, my role is to disseminate innovative teaching methods with the use of technology and digital tools.

My school is in the center of the city, many students come from the hinterland and many are second generation immigrants. Every year, the first generation foreign students and my school to welcome them offers them an inclusive teaching. The problem is that often these students are placed in classes appropriate to their chronological age but not to their level of Italian language.

IOANNA, GREECE Hi everyone! I am Ioanna and I am from Greece. I have been a Head Teacher since 2007 in 21st Primary School of Athens “Lela Karagianni”. The school is located in one of the most depressed areas of the city centre where the great majority of the residents are economical immigrants and refugees. In our school there are 218 students aged 6-12 years old coming from 22 countries.Since the late 90s and until recently the majority of our students come from families migrant workers mainly from Albania and the former Eastern bloc countries. The last two years because of the crisis in the "Greater Middle East" countries, the demography of our students has changed. Out of the 218 students 115 are children-second generation immigrants (55 from Albania, 20 from Romania 8 out of Africa and the rest from various countries of the former Eastern bloc) and 28 newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers (Syria, Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Bangladesh). Our school’s initiative in educational programmes which promote intercultural education and contribute to the peaceful cohabitation within a multicultural social environment, are not enough to encounter the challenges created by the increased incoming of the newly arrived migrants who don’t speak the Greek language. I teach in an area which is quite difficult to deal with.. actually the South of Italy is not - generally speaking - a bed of roses, and my school is located in an area where many migrants come every year to work (orange and olive picking). Hello! I'm Linda and I'm a teacher in an Instruction Preparing for Basic Education-class in a primary school in Vantaa close to Helsinki. In Finland we have a system where immigrants attend an Instruction Preparing for Basic Education- class for one year after coming to Finland. This one year they are focusing on learning the Finnish language and after that they move on to general teaching, each one according to their age-level. This means that in my class I have only recently arrived immigrant students of ages between 7 and 12, most of whom don't speak more than a few words Finnish. I love my job because no two days are the same and the children are all different and wonderful!

I'm a secondary school teacher and I've been teaching English as a foreign language for 17 years.The school I'm currently teaching in doesn't have many foreign students but over the past years I had the opportunity to teach in different schools welcoming students from Eu and non Eu countries, therefore I dealt with a multicultural context where some of the students were newly arrived and they couldn't speak Italian; even if communication with those who could speak English wasn't hard, I think Learning the languange spoken in the country you live in is the first step for integration. As I'm really concerned with this matter, I'm currently attending a specialising degree course for teaching Italian to foreign people. I think multiculturalism is a vey important topic nowadays and teachers need to develop their competence in this field!

I've been teaching in a primary school in Rome for 30 years. My schools were all located in outskirts, where social and cultural backgrounds heavily affected pupils learning. Each class was so mixed and intercultural that we could have a whole world in one group. In the school were I spent 12 years we had 23 different languages, a large Roma community ( with at least 3 different kinds of Romanes), a wide range of social classes among families, from the University teachers to workers and beggars. The most coloured, happy, welcoming school community you can imagine. I miss them so much!

Last year I lived an extraordinary working experience being in the support service for Italian National Digital Plan at Ministry of Education; I did not teach for a year but I learnt a lot about complex organizations and national duties.

In September my life changed completely as I was called to teach in the Italian school in Madrid. I live here in Spain now and it's really a challenging experience! I teach in a school that is formally Italian, but the majority of pupils are Spanish mother tongue. With other colleagues I'm trying to afford a project- research on bilingual learning/ teaching.

I have been teaching in this order of school from 2001, nevertheless , this is the First time that I teach in a First Class.

My class is composed by 22 students and 8 of them are foreigners (only one was born abroad while the other had one or both parents born in another country.

My school is in Turin’s periphery that is mutietnic and offer us a lot of activities (cultural and sportive).

I am a psychotherapist, I’m married and I have got two children too.

I like my job, I like it very much. I love it because I think that everyday can be an occasion to learn something because everyone may teach something to others. So, everyday I have 22 teachers! I’m so lucky!

I like to use tecnology and fantasy during my lessons, but I belive that the most important teaching method is a serene atmosphere where everyone can be himself, increase their self-esteem. For all of these reason, I belive in the importance of enchance own origins, own culture and, consequently, own uniqueness.

I'm constantly in training and I am passionate about foreign languages and the process of language learning and acquisition.
Because of so many schools i get to come in contact with five school principals, five boards of teachers and too many stressful parents who all look forward in sharing their thoughts and worries about their children's future. So it's imperative that i keep a low profile and to try to do my job as well as possible.
All my classes are mixed. We sometimes use Technology such as computers and a white board but the lessons are mainly thought in the most traditional way due to lack of facilities or space in the school
I often have to move from one classroom to the other in order to find a place to have my lesson. Still I try to make ends meet.

Hello, All! My name's Maura and I've been a Primary school State teacher for about twenty years now (to be honest, as a substitute teacher I worked as a preeschool teacher too...). I'm teaching a 5 garde class a lot of subjects (Italian language, English - I can assure you that my comprehension skills are far better than my writing or speaking ones -, History, Geography, art, music, PE and I also work with a group of pupils while their schoolmates are attending Catholic Religion lessons. Since there is in our town a private school where quite a lot of middle class, well off children are enrolled, in our classroom there is quite a good percentage of pupils coming from different areas of the world (primarily from Pakistan, but also from China, Africa, and East European countries... The problem is, sometimes they were born in Italy, but then sent in their Country to be looked after by grandparents or relatives, so they are officially Italians, even though they can't often speak or understand one word in Italian (at the beginning, of corse...) so we don't usually get the resources intended for areas with an high immigration level and we have to use other ways to help them... I hopo to discover, thanks to everybody contribution, some useful ways to get the life of these children easier and happier...

Cultural diversity is really something that interests me for personal and professional reasons. First of all, my family is pretty much 100% Belgian and my parents were not really interested in travelling so cultural exchange was not part of my growing up experience. Hello, my name's Chiara and I am from Bergamo, a nice city in the north of Italy. I have been teaching English for 9 years now. I used to teach in a lower secondary school (kids aged 11-13), but this year I am teaching to adults. The Italian Ministry of Education supports and promotes education for adults through schools called CPIA (Centri per l'Istruzione degli Adulti): adults who did not have the opportunity to study or left school too soon can start again and get their diploma. We teach mainly to immigrants and refugees. So I do not teach to Italians. My class groups are composed by students from different countries (mainly Northern and Western Africa, China and South America). Such an unexpected change in my career has been very challenging and I'm trying my best to improve my intercultural competences. Hopefully this course will help.

Hello! I'm a teacher of English in a lower Secondary School . I work in a little town in Sardinia. In one of my my classes this year there are two refugees. They are both boys aged 13 and they come from differrent Countries : Senegal and the Ivory Coast. So they speak different languages.
It's very hard to teach a school subject without a mediation language. Moreover, the boys have been introduced in a second class and they cannot follow a school programme started the previous year-
I think that the first thing to do is make them socialise and make friends with the other students of the class

I’ve been teaching in Junior High in Salerno area for 22 years. Since my schools were located in outskirts, I cope with several students with very different cultural and social backgrounds.

In September 2015 my life changed completely as I was called to teach Italian in a Bilingual School in Albania. So, I’ve been living and teaching in Shkoder since 2015. In this school I’m a mother tongue teacher, teaching Italian to Albanian kids between 11 to 14 years old. With Albanian colleagues I'm affording a project on bilingual learning/ teaching.

This experience has changed my life! It's a great experience.
