How did Cyclone Yasi occur?

Cyclone Yasi was formed from two things that are needed to make a tropical cyclone: a group of rainclouds over a warm ocean or sea.

Tropical cyclones are like engines that use warm, moist air as their fuel. The air is like fuel because the warm air is rising, causing an area of high pressure above the warm water and low pressure below the area of high pressure. Air from the high pressure area travels back down to the low pressure above the warm body of water, which then starts the cycle again. As the warm, moist air cools down, the water starts to form clouds. All of the clouds start to spin and keep growing, fed by more air rising from the surface.

'Zoomed-in' map, showing the specific areas that were affected.

Latitude and longitude are a way of explaining where a place is. Longitude lines run vertically from the north pole to south pole and latitude lines run horizontally from east to west around the circumference of the globe. The lines cross to give you two coordinates (latitude specified first, then longitude), to identify where the place is. These lines are very similar to the lines on a street map.
e.g. Cairns is located on Latitude 16° 55' S, and Longitude 145° 46' E
Bibliography:
http://www.mapsofworld.com/lat_long/australia-lat-long.html
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cyclone_Yasi
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Latitude
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Longitude

Economic impacts:
1. The cleanup bill was over 10 billion dollars, and still more money was needed to help in the towns of Cairns and Townsville.
2. Dunk Island resort closed down because they didn't have enough money to repair the resort.
3. Insurance premiums in Queensland (especially in cyclone areas) increased in prices because they were highly certain they would have to make future claims.
4. A lot of businesses had to temporarily/permanently close and food supplies were in short supply.

Social Impacts (advantages and disadvantages):
1. Advantage: People have come together to be prepared for cyclones in the future and have met new people and made new relationships.
2. Disadvantage: The cyclone knocked down many electricity poles and mobile towers, causing disruption to electricity to be used at home, therefore making it difficult to for phones and etc. to be used to contact others.

Environmental impacts:
1. Many of the banana plants in Queensland were destroyed, and since Queensland is the 3rd biggest banana contributor in Australia, it will deeply impact on the rest of Australia. As well as the banana plantations, sugar cane plantations were destroyed as well.
2. Some rainforests and forests were destroyed, and some of them were full of endangered species of animals.
