I believe that students should be required to learn a second language besides English, at least for a year or two. I believe this because students can benefit from the knowledge of another language, academically and internationally. In both texts, it states ,”Learning a language improves students’ vocabulary skills”, “. . .Grow up to be adults who are clear communicators”, and “ . . . Improves cognitive development. we said. It enhances academic skills, encourages a sense of a wider world and looks good to colleges.” These texts clearly show the view that a second language is clearly valuable. Even the opposing article has points that agree with this sentiment.

Students should be required to learn another language besides English because of the multiple reasons stated such as, grammar improvements and/or being able to clearly communicate, the demand for people who speak multiple languages, and lastly, it enhances academic achievement/skills while also improving chances of getting accepted into colleges. I can support my claim with the text which states, “when they learn the grammar rules for another language, student’s English grammar improves.” The text also states, “Students who learn a second language as children grow up to be adults who are clear communicators.” To support my claim a little bit more, the text states, “..there will always be a demand for Americans who speak foreign languages.” These quotes from the text prove how important and useful it would be for Americans to learn a second language. Not only did one of these quotes come from the opposing article, but the quotes also repeat themselves in the text faintly.

Most people believe that learning a another language can be very helpful in your life because it can help you grow your vocabulary. Other people believe that learning another language is a complete waste of your time. In my opinion learning another language can be very beneficial because of all the useful ways you can apply it in your everyday life. For example I take Spanish class and I sometimes use google translate, but it would be better if I knew Spanish so that way I wouldn’t have to look up some of the answers. On slide seven paragraph three explains that, “Students who learn a second language as children grow up to be adults who are clear communicators.” This piece of text helps example that learning another language can even influence your life. Learning another language can help you be a better communicator and it can also grow your vocabulary.

No, I don’t think kids should be required to learn a second language. As the text states, “ Despite this, many countries outside of the United States require their children to learn a second language, frequently English.” So there would be no reason for kids in the U.S. to learn another language if other countries are already teaching their kids English. And since their are so many other countries, what language would we learn? The text also states that, “... much of the world is striving to learn english….” and, “... learning a foreign language is a waste of time.” So if most people already think it’s a waste of time, and since most of the world is already learning english, kids in the U.S. don’t necessarily need to learn another language.

I do not think students should be required to learn a language besides English only if they wanted to and not be required to. In ‘Why Waste Time on a Foreign Language?’ what really swayed me to this decision was this, “Language study is complete nonsense for most people. I’d wager close to 80% of kids taking foreign languages in high school do so because they have to.” In my opinion, I’d also say that not many Americans go out of the country or move to a state with a different language often. However learning another language is beneficial it is also a waste of time towards others who would never plan to use it at all.

Learning a second language can be difficult for many children. Although learning a second language has its pros i think that it’s not necessary. In the text it states “ … but in recent years , with advancements of technology, the world has become better connected.” This shows that people can just use google translate to speak another language you don’t have to take years to learn a second language when we have the internet. In the text it also states “In the process of learning a second language people are also exposed to other cultures.” this shows how its not important to learn a second language.

In the article, Why Waste Time on a Foreign Language? By Jay Matthews, it states, “‘It is a waste of time and money in our schools,’ said a parent who remembered seeing empty language lab stalls.” Everywhere else in the world, people are learning English, so it’s a waste of time for us. There should always be options to learn a different language for anyone who’s interested in doing so, but it should not be required. If it does end up being required to learn a language, schools need to offer as many languages as they can so students can at least pick the one they’re most interested in.

I think this because learning a new language improves students vocabulary, improves cognitive development, and you could get a chance to get improved by a college because you know a second language. In the text it says " Spanish is the most popular choice- is that selective colleges often require them". This means that a lot of colleges like when people know Spanish as a second language and that they most likely improve people that know Spanish as a second language.
