After the session sign-ups, return to this laptop.

Do the awkward 'So, we're a group' thing. Count to about 20 before someone takes charge and moves to ...

Take this laptop with you. Find a space where you can work together. You can use the breakout spaces in the building, head to one of the rooms from the workshops, anywhere you like!

Your task as a group is to:

Discuss the topic

Arrive at at least one practical response or outcome from your discussion. A problem solved? A thing to do? Be productive. (Stuck? See below for some suggestions.)

Debate. Discuss. Do. You have until 3pm.

You can use this padlet wall to keep a record of your conversations and outcomes. Easiest way: choose a scribe. Just scroll to make more space.

At 3pm, head back to the Forum Theatre. Bring this laptop with you. Yes, you will be asked to report back ... so pick a reporter now to save everyone looking expectantly at each other later on ;)

The Awkward Silent Class

Why are classes silent?
Students are sometimes shy, or sometimes they haven't done the readings and are scared of showing they haven't done the work.

The ones who talk sit together - the ones who don't talk sit together.

The level of talking doesn't necessarily reflect in the quality of their work - quiet ones often do really well in essays.

Things we've done that have worked well/outcomes:
1. Set up a good environment at the beginning - so that they feel comfortable to speak later in the semester (share experiences related to subject, ie migration stories)

2. Share your experiences with them - open up, be a bit vulnerable, use humor so they feel comfortable with you and more confident talking but establish clear boundaries

3. Learn their names

4. At beginning of each tutorial, encourage students to ask questions about things they don't know/don't understand. It makes it ok for students to voice that they don't understand something

5. Going around the room to start off - asking a non-threatening question.

6. Get the introverted ones to talk to each other - they feel more comfortable.

7. Debates - but scaffold well, show them how it works. Not slam each other etc.

8. Show that you are comfortable in silence - not fidgety. Then they might speak cos they know you won't bail them out.

9. have several questions and put the page number where they can find the answer - read in the tutorial and then discuss.

10. Asking individual people to speak - need to be careful who you choose but can be good especially at the later stage of a tutorial.

11. Give them more scaffolding for the next week's reading - give them the themes, the questions, remind them of what they need to focus on.
