Parent–Teacher Meeting.

I´m an English teacher meeting with the parent of one of my students, Karen, to discuss her academic progress in class.

Teacher Kam: Good morning, Mrs. Guarin! It’s so nice to see you again. Please, have a seat. How are you today?

Mrs. Guarin: I’m fine, thank you. How is Karen doing this semester?

Teacher Kam: Overall, Karen is doing very well. She’s a curious and creative student, and she always participates actively in class discussions. Her speaking skills have really improved, she’s more confident expressing her ideas in English.

However, I’ve noticed that she sometimes struggles with grammar accuracy, especially when writing longer texts. We’re working on that by doing short writing exercises every week.

Mrs. Guarin: Oh, I see. She enjoys English very much, but sometimes she gets frustrated when she makes mistakes.

Teacher Kam: That’s completely normal. I always remind my students that mistakes are part of learning. What’s important is that Karen is willing to try, ask questions, and correct herself, and she does that consistently.

Mrs. Guarin: I’m glad to hear that. How can I support her at home?

Teacher Kam: You can encourage her to read short stories or watch movies in English with subtitles. It helps reinforce vocabulary naturally. And maybe she can keep a small journal in English.

Mrs. Guarin: That’s a great idea. Thank you for your suggestions.

Teacher Kam: My pleasure! Karen is making wonderful progress, and with a little more focus on writing practice, I’m sure she’ll continue to improve. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you so much for coming today. Have a great day!

The conversation proceeds as follows:

Waiter: Good evening, welcome to La Bella Vita Restaurant. My name is Steven, and I'll be your waiter tonight. I’ll have the grilled salmon, please.
Catalina (Me): I’ll order the chicken risotto, please. Could I have a cold lemonade with that?
Waiter: Of course.

Doctor’s Appointment

I have scheduled a medical appointment because I have not been feeling well for the past few days. I am visiting my family doctor to explain my symptoms and receive the appropriate treatment. The following conversation takes place in the doctor’s office:

Doctor: Good morning. Could you come in and sit down, please. How are you feeling today?

Patient Catalina: Good morning, doctor. Thank you. I've been feeling very ill since last weekend.

Doctor: I'm sorry. Could you please describe your symptoms? What's wrong?

Patient Catalina : Of course. I've had a severe headache, a sore throat, and a persistent cough. I also had a high fever last night and am generally unwell. My whole body aches.

Doctor: I see. You've had many symptoms. What was your temperature last time?

Patient: Around 39.5 degrees Celsius, doctor.

Doctor: Have you taken any medication so far?

Patient Catalina: Just a little paracetamol and a hot tea, but it hasn't helped much.

Doctor: Okay. I'll check your throat and take your temperature again. Please open your mouth and say "ah."

Patient Catalina : Ah… (open my mouth)

Doctor: Your throat is quite red and your fever is still a little high. You seem to have a throat infection, possibly viral or a virus. I'm going to prescribe an antibiotic and cough syrup. You should also rest and drink plenty of fluids for a few days.

Patient Catalina: Thank you, doctor. How often should I take the medication?

Doctor: Take one tablet every eight hours for seven days and the syrup three times a day. If your symptoms don't improve in three days, please, however, I'm going to give you a three-day sick leave because you look very sick. Please come back for a follow-up appointment.

Patient Catalina: I understand. Thank you very much for your care and attention.

Doctor: You're welcome. Take care, and I hope you get better soon. It was a pleasure serving and caring for you.
