Based on a true story of a brutal drug war between two gangs in the 70’s and 80’s in the slums outside of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil...here lies the City of God. The gang Tender Trio robs gas trucks, motels, and even their own friends if they have to, while younger generations watch and learn. Everyone fears Li'l Zé ; the town gangster, as he has prospered very well from his crimes and owns the city. He causes all violence, as fear overcomes this City and he wipes out all rival gangs without any mercy. Bené, his best friend is the only person left trying to keep him sane, and on the good side. Slowly...Bené starts to want no part of it. Yet he keeps getting swept up in the madness. In this scene, we will see how all Bené wants is love, and he has it with his partner Angélica. But is that enough? In this excerpt scene written in Portuguese, we will be comparing it to the English and Spanish translation of the scene, as well as identifying any similarities and differences between this scene from City Of God, and the Portuguese Poem taken from Into English entitled “A pequena praꞔa” (The Small Square) written by Sophia de Mello Bryner. Welcome to the City of God...

Isabella Fagbore
