"Virunga," directed by Orlando Von Einsiedel explores the factors threatening Virunga National Park in the Congo, Africa. This documentary was helpful because it provided a real-world example for the destruction of national parks. This makes the problem more relatable for viewers, as well as illustrates the severity of the issue. Throughout the film, many various clips were shown of the violence caused by the rebel army, M23, which added to the destruction of the park. The film also depicted displaced groups of people, and poached animals. By showing this information, the filmmaker emphasizes how dire this environmental situation is. Most African countries use the American way of creating national parks, in sectioning off large areas of land and keeping humans out. But in Africa humans rely on the land far more than they do in America leading to most citizens, especially poachers ignoring national park land in order to make a profit. This negates the purpose of national parks entirely, if Africa wants to successfully preserve their land they will have to find a way for nature and humans to live side by side harmoniously. poaching and expansion of urban areas are bringing many animals only found in Africa, like the mountain gorilla to the brink of extinction.

"The traditional parks model of closing off areas and keeping people out simply may not work in Africa, where human demands on the land are great. Instead, what’s needed is an approach that finds ways to enable people and animals to co-exist."

These parks are important in that they are working to preserve what little nature the Earth still has left. Studies have shown that, 

"Being in nature, or even viewing scenes of nature, reduces anger, fear, and stress and increases pleasant feelings. Exposure to nature not only makes you feel better emotionally, it contributes to your physical well being, reducing blood pressure, heart rate, muscle tension, and the production of stress hormones. It may even reduce mortality."

In recent years, Texas Legislature has stopped funding for Texas Parks and Wildlife Local Park Grant programs. Parks thrive due to donations, revenue, and support from the community and state. Because parks depend on these factors, limited funding threatens the existence of these institutions.

“In 2011, the 82nd Texas Legislature suspended funding for the Texas Parks and Wildlife Local Park Grant Programs created." (3)

 Environment Texas wants the 83rd Texas Legislature to fully restore funding to the Local Parks Grant Programs to support their growth. They also want the Legislature to support legislation that creates a Constitutional dedication of sporting goods tax revenue for use in parks, and ensure that all candidate grant projects should be subject to the established competitive grant process. A final request by Environment Texas is that the community publicise this funding issue so that action will be taken for the injustice.
