History of Japan Wifi/Internet

The start of Japan's step into the world of the Internet/Wifi started in 1984. However, the Internet was not accessible to everyone. The most common way to use it was telephone lines. It became better when in the 1990's, television networks started making their own cable for the Internet. As technology evolved, people started buying personal computers and getting more access to the Internet. However, only 37.8% of households in Japan had access to the Internet in 1993 while 11.9% of households had pc's.

By 2004, Japan's use of technology and the internet changed as now there are plans such as 30 Mbits per second for 30 USD, 100 Mbits for 50 USD, and finally 1 gbits per second for 90 USD. Japan kept growing and growing through the use of technology and now they are one of the top countries with fast internet. They have an average wifi speed of 47 megabytes per second which is higher than the United States. They have become a country that has been known for their fast evolution when it comes to technology. They're rate of improvement is faster than most countries.

Characteristics & Culture of Japans Internet/Wifi

Some characteristics of the Culture of the Internet in Japan today are the following:

1). Widespread access

2). Reliability

3). Innovation

4). Fast Speeds

Japan's internet culture is very high as the widespread access is a key example of it. In 2020 alone, 116.8 million people have had access to the internet. That is a total of 91.3% of the population of Japan. This was 7th in the world for widespread access.

Along with Widespread access, Reliability is also something Internet culture in Japan shows. Hundreds of millions of people rely on the internet in Japan to get by whether for entertainment or their job, it's essential in Japan. 90% of Japan use the internet & 100% of businesses use the internet.

The innovation of the internet in Japan is something that's constantly evolving. The faster the internet, the better their economy/businesses could be. The innovation of the internet is significant and as of now, Japanese engineers have figured out a way to increase internet speeds by hundreds and hundreds of times. This leads to the next topic, fast speeds.

Through fiber optics, Japanese engineers have made internet speeds ridiculously high which is 319 Terabytes per second. This is a type of speed that's incomprehensible even though it doesn't seem much. 319 Terabytes can download 57,000 full-length movies in just 1 second. Just 2gbs per second is internet that is able to do things instantly like loading hundreds of tabs. When you think of it like that, 1 terabyte is ridiculously fast compared to 2 gbs per second. However, they were able to get 319 terabytes and were able to carry out this connection for 3,0001 kilometers.

Culture Comparison to the United States

Internet culture to Japan is highly different. Japan is always trying to innovate and evolve their internet for better uses. They have a more heavy reliance on internet then we do in the US. In the US we don't really care about internet that much unless we have a bad plan. We just go about our day with internet that can satisfy us. Even in a business setting, we don't care about it because of the wide access there is to internet. However, in Japans view, even if 90% of their population has Wifi, they will still continue to grow it.

What I like about this topic is the fact that I already had prior knowledge to this. Having prior knowledge to this really helped me out a lot as I didn't need to search much up. I chose this because of the fact Wifi/Internet is something we use in our daily lives without any care, so what would it be like for another country? would it be different? We don't pay much attention to it but countries like Japan are still trying to make it better and better.
