         <description><![CDATA[<div><a href="https://pathways.nice.org.uk/pathways/dementia"><br>Dementia - an integrated view of everything NICE has said</a></div><div><br>Non-pharmacological interventions<br><br></div><div>If a person with dementia develops distressing non-cognitive symptoms or behaviour that challenges, offer an early assessment to identify factors that may influence the behaviour. Include:</div><ul><li>physical health</li><li>depression</li><li>possible undetected pain or discomfort</li><li>side effects of medication</li><li>individual biography</li><li>psychosocial factors</li><li>physical environmental factors</li><li>behavioural and functional analysis in conjunction with carers and care workers.</li></ul><div>For more information see the NICE pathway on <a href="https://pathways.nice.org.uk/pathways/depression">depression</a>.</div><div>Develop individual care plans, record in the notes and review regularly at a frequency agreed with carers and staff.</div><div>For comorbid agitation, consider interventions tailored to the person's preferences, skills and abilities.</div><ul><li>Monitor response and adapt the care plan as needed.</li><li>Depending on availability, consider options including:<a href="https://pathways.nice.org.uk/pathways/dementia#pathways-dementia-paths-dementia-interventions-nodes-non-pharmacological-interventions-for-non-cognitive-symptoms-fullcontent-footnote-7cccff636cbc4595b36eb1bb3d8dcf4b">1</a><ul><li>aromatherapy</li><li>multisensory stimulation</li><li>therapeutic use of music and/or dancing</li><li>animal-assisted therapy</li><li>massage.</li></ul></li></ul>]]></description>
