Grandes Viajeros es una enciclopedia temática que relata las aventuras de cuatro héroes de distintas épocas: Erik el Rojo, Marco Polo, Magallanes, Darwin y presenta actividades de lectura y escritura específicamente diseñadas para promover avances en el proceso de alfabetización. La serie despliega una propuesta de alfabetización que se inscribe en el enfoque de área de Prácticas del Lenguaje del Diseño Curricular de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. Las secuencias de trabajo que atraviesan los fascículos consideran los desarrollos teóricos y didácticos vinculados a la línea de investigación psicogenética y la conceptualización de la lectura y la escritura como práctica socio histórica y cultural -en las que se ubica a los niños como genuinos lectores y escritores, aunque no dominen el sistema de escritura-. 
Los materiales que componen la serie Grandes Viajeros son:  
  • dos Fascículos para los niños destinados a la lectura –el primero presenta la vida y aventuras de Erik el Rojo y Marco Polo; el segundo, las de Magallanes y Darwin-,  
  • un Material de Escritura con Fichas para encarpetar, que presentan diversas propuestas vinculadas tanto a la reflexión sobre el sistema de escritura como a los quehaceres de lectura y escritura en contextos de estudio.  
  • un Material para el Maestro con reflexiones didácticas, orientaciones para el empleo de estos materiales y algunas sugerencias para intervenir principalmente en las situaciones de escritura.  unas Fichas de Síntesis que permiten recuperar lo trabajado y relevar datos sobre el progreso de los alumnos
