I am giving kids choice and not hard deadlines so things have to be turned in by our next Zoom-Actually, Mara L. brought up an excellent point on providing choices in activities which then leads to points in their favor by choosing as many activities for the week as they want. Only can improve their grade and learning-I liked this and started the same process-Ania

I was surprised by the students who showed up! I was still at around 50% participation, but those that participated were ones that I wasn't expecting. It's great data for planning for next year's courses to give them options for raising their grades and participating in class.

For each Zoom, I did a "highs and lows" check-in. They're used to this because we would do it every Monday. They need to give one highlight and one lowlight from their time at home. It forces them to find something positive versus focusing on only the negative. As for my own SEL needs.....it's still a work in progress. With 2 small kids and a sick spouse, it's difficult right now.

I'm going to encourage more chat conversations than verbal. With a lot of my students choosing to not show their faces, it's really hard to gauge where they are in our conversation. I'll be structuring my "lessons" to incorporate more written responses and then call on individuals to verbally respond.

We do a thing in class called "glad moments" where we celebrate the small things. The beginning of the week was GREAT, the end of the week was a little more challenging getting them to talk and participate. I personally am struggling with the mornings trying to get my 8 yrs old going on her REMOTE LEARNING. It takes about 20-30 minutes to get her all going and locked in and then needing to jump right to our zoom.

I think it shows you how much the students care about their relationships with their classmates and teachers. It was challenging, however, to see students at the end of the week turning off their cameras and microphones. It was hard to make a connection with the students with a blank screen. I will be asking all students to keep cameras on for the whole length of the zoom conferences.

From week 1 to week 2, I'm going to switch my 9am's to 10am which I feel will boost attendance. Also, kids that did show up for the zooms said that they would prefer it starting at 10 rather than 9.

Every activity that we've done so far has an interest-based component to it. I also start each lesson with a survey that asks students questions that tie directly into any social/emotional concerns they might have. A few have opened up to me in the survey-in a way they never would during a group ZOOM conference. It's just awkward, because I always respond via e-mail- where in the past I could have that one on one conversation with the kids.

I've explained to the students that this remote learning is a huge opportunity to make up any missing work as I will count the assignments we're doing doing this time as stand-ins for work in class. There are a few kids who I can tell feel like they are getting a second chance and are taking the opportunity!

I found that a lot of the kids didn't even want to show their faces on the sceen- so I was teaching to a bunch of faceless, muted screens- not good. I had them each make a virtual background (which doesn't work on every ipad- I'm finding out) and then share what it looks like on the screen and talk about why they chose the imagery they did. A lot of kids started "coming out of their shell".

When I do any kind of screen sharing, I stop after 3-5 minutes and either look in my chat window (because I can't see everyone's face), and ask them if they have any questions or concerns, or go back to a gallery view of the class and ask a question about what was covered to make sure that the kids are understanding and still "there".

Some kids took the initiative even before our meeting to get started on the materials I had posted on schoology. The most challenging is trying to get students to do something after the zoom. Still trying find ways to get these kids invested - I might send individual emails to students and parents. - Ann Ku

I really enjoyed having a ZOOM class with my Geometry students. They responded well to the work we did together, they asked questions and used the chat to give me useful feedback. I will continue to find ways for the students to engage during the ZOOM rather than just listen. It helps to have some form of interaction.

It was nice to be able to talk to my students again. It is so weird not seeing them almost every day. It is challenging for me to make connections with all students though. Some students will chat a little before or after class, but many will just log on, keep their videos off and not say anything. I also have had significantly less students come to class starting week 2.

I think the zooms are helping with student morale. I am emailing students separately when I don't see them in the weekly zoom. I also gave them choices for what to work on for the week -- I think that still confuses them despite the fact that I have explained they don't have to do EVERYTHING I have provided :) For myself, I have been taking long walks when I can....being disconnected from tech at some point during the day is SUPER important for me.
