In Cambodia, people were persecuted by being forced into labor camps to work in the rice paddies and in many cases family was broken apart by sending different family members to different camps. After making the citizens do all of the hard labor, the Khmer Rouge stripped people of their clothes and gave them 1 set of clothes. In these camps, people were struck with famine. The Khmer Rouge took away most of the food from the citizens and gave them 1 meal a day consisting of some rice in water. In many cases, they did not even get 1 full meal a day. Not only that, stealing food from the Khmer Rouge was forbidden and the famine killed about 500 thousand to 1.5 million people in total.

The Khmer Rouge used a number of different methods to dehumanize their opposition, but the most prevalent method was that of using language. For example, the victims were called "worms" who "brought nothing but bladders full of urine". Furthermore, propaganda was also used. A famous example is a Khmer Rouge slogan that stated, "To spare you is no profit, to destroy you is no loss". This made the victims feel as if their worth was determined only by an amount of money or an amount of hours of work they completed.

The organization of the Cambodian Genocide was headed by the eventual leader of the Khmer Rouge, Pol Pot. A man who believed strongly in Maoist communist ideals, Pol Pot put his own spin on things and made people abandon their city lives in favor of farming. He recruited mostly homeless and addicted teenagers of the streets to fight in his army because they were most likely to oppose the city life that they suffered through. Backed by other forces such as China in their efforts, the Khmer Rouge were able to receive supplies to not only launch but sustain their rule.

After the Genocide, many Khmer Rouge leaders denied or shifted the blame to other people when accused of mass famine. They also claimed that any starvation that had occurred because of droughts or bad harvests, even when some Khmer Rouge officials claimed that the bans on private eating or even slightly going against the Khmer Rouges orders could result in death. One example is Nuon Chea, one of the Khmer Rouges leaders denied having anything to do with the killings and said that his "treacherous subordinates" were the ones to blame.

When the regime first started they knew what they were doing, trying to do, turn Cambodia into a communist peasant farming society. They knew where they were going to send people with the ability to farm and how to kill the others. The Khmer Rouge like many other genocide regimes had a motto. Some of the few are ...
Together We Can Do, Keep 'Em Firing
No Gain In Keeping, No Loss In Weeding Out

Many people people were discriminated against under the Khmer Rouge regime. The Chinese in Cambodia were referred to as "New People" symbolizing that they might be enemies or prisoner of war. However, the Muslim Cham population in Cambodia had it worst. Since they had an advanced and sophisticated society the Khmer Rouge saw this as power which they sought to exterminate. They made Muslim women cut their hair and weren't allowed to wear sarongs anymore. Also all Muslims who participated in the peasant farming society had to wear black pajamas. Adding to the list of horrors, the Khmer Rouge restricted the Muslims religious activities.
