It's the first novel by Canarian writer Andrea Abreu. A story about two girls growing up in a small town in Tenerife, it's become a must-read novel if you are a millenial girl.

The main characters in the novel are two friends, Isora and "Shit", living in their small hometown during the summer. Andrea Abreu is capable of describing a beautiful but dirty friendship, so real, full of idealization, jealousy and problems, like most young friendships are. She takes us back to that time, when we were young and we were finding out our fears and trying to understand friendship, class differences, sexual awakening...etc for the first time.

We follow these friends in a lot of typical summer situations and we identify with them if we have grown up in a lower-middle class family during the 90's. It doesn't matter if your village was in Galicia or in the Canary lslands, we all share those thoughts, that fear, and that feeling when we meet someone who turns our world upside down in the same way that Isora did with "Shit's". Panza de burro is full of references to popular culture (Tazos, Pokemon, Messenger, Aventura's songs...) that make impossible not reading it with a melancholic smile in our faces, that sometimes turns into a sad face when we recognize ourselves at the worst anecdotes.

The great strength of this book is that it was written from the uniqueness of her own Canarian language, a language which is personal, exuberant and full of musicality and rhythm. Sometimes you can't understand what you're reading but it isn't a real problem because it makes you feel closer to their characters.

Not only is a raw emotional book, but it also takes you back to that child who spent her summer asking herself why everything was so complicated at that time. For all those 90's little girls, Panza de burro is a must.

Paula.

The Kite Runner was written by Khaled Hosseini as a historical fiction novel. Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan. His family was granted asylum in the United States, right after the war broke out. Hosseini started writing his first book, “The Kite Runner”. The Kite Runner had me thrilled and moved, both at the same time. It tells the story of Amir and Hassan, the closest of friends and experts in the art of kite flying. The two young boys live in Kabul and this year they are going to try harder than ever to win the local kite-fighting tournament—a popular Afghan pastime. However, war comes to Afghanistan, and the country becomes an extremely dangerous place. Overall, this book was very captivating. This was a great book. I absolutely liked this book, but the ending is highly predictable. The smart usage of metaphors is what makes the book engaging and the writing meaningful. I encourage you to read this book. There is even a movie that goes along with it!

Vero A.

I’m going to write about my last reading. The book is called Patria and it was written by Fernando Aranburu.

The book is a novel and it describes the story of two families in conflict who live with the violence of a terrorism band (ETA) in Basque Country. It tells the situation from the point of view of the two mothers who are the main characters.

Although the book has a lot of pages and the narration can be a bit messy, it’s easy to read because it’s a realistic and addictive story. It seems that you are living the situation yourself.

Even though it’s a sad story, it’s interesting to read because you will learn more about the two faces of Basque Society for thirty years. So, I recommend to read it because it's the most courageous narrative about the violence in Basque Country. I really liked it.

This novel was a bestseller with many awards and it had a television adaptation in 2020.

Fátima C.

I am going to talk about a really surprising discovery. Although it was a compulsory reading because it is included in the curriculum of the high school Spanish exams, I found it to be very enjoyable and entertaining. La Fundación is a play which was written by Antonio Buero Vallejo. The book tells the story of five men who are in prison, sentenced to death. One of them thinks they are in a research center to work due to his feeling of guilt for betraying his colleagues (so he imagines all elements of the center, including people). In my opinion, this book is a perfect reading if you are looking for a captivating and thought-provoking story. It is also easy-to-read and sometimes the plot has an unexpected twist. There is only one negative thing I could say about the book, and it is that it sometimes seems a bit slow, but actually you will be highly entertained and it will keep you reading non-stop. Don't miss it!

Sheila Pérez

El Bosque de los Cuatro Vientos is a novel, that was written by María Oruña last August.
This novel is set in Galicia, in a Ourense region, Santo Estevo.
It deals with the nine Santo Estevo's rings.
It's set in two different environments, one of them is in 1830, where a woman called Marina fights social problems, love and other problems in that time; and the other is nowdays, where a man, who is an anthropologist works joining historical pieces and he investigates that leyend (the nine rings) and he finds a murder related to that,,which took place in the Santo Estevo's Monastery.
I like this book very much because it's acareless novel and it writes about two completely different worlds. They are separeted and joined at the same time.
For me, It is enjoyable but , It is a little bit complicated to follow because the novel mixes two different periods.
On the other hand, yo can't stop reading it.

Irene Cancela

"La catedral del Mar" by Ildefonso Falcones, is the book which has marked me the most.
It hooked me since the first page, the details which the author relates and the descriptions transport you to that room. It's a very well written novel. It describes technical terms of medieval architecture.
I think it's very easy to read and to follow the plot. The book mixes perfectly the hard works during the construction of a cathedral with the intricate life of a child who is born bastard, grown up slave and fights for his freedom during all his life. Set in Barcelona in the 14th century, in which all turns around the wealth of the fiefds and the poverty, and forced loyalty, of the farmers to their lords.
I loved this book so much, and I recommend it to all my friends when they ask me for my perfect book.

Helena del Mar Casado

This book is the first novel of my favourite writer. He´s called John Verdon. He´s a great writer in the United States. The book is called Think of a Number in original version or Sé lo que estás pensando in Spanish. It´s a mystery novel about a serial killer in New York.
The protagonist is a retired policeman who returns to solve crimes because he was the best detective in New York and he doesn´t adapt to being at home without working. It´s well written and the main character is the narrator. The story is quite interesting but it´s difficult to read because there are so many different people and a lot of things to follow. You can´t guess who is the killer until the very last page.
I love this author's writings because you have to be attentive at all times. I couldn’t put the book down until I got to the end. I can recommend it very much. John Verdon has written other books based on the same policeman. I have read them all¡¡¡

Rubén Hermelo.

Reading’s not my greatest passion, but lately I’ve had to read about different topics: from kitchen techniques in Galicia to comics in English, from old noir in Spanish to satire in Italian.

I’ll tell you about my latest reading, a book recommended to me and which accompanied me on my daily commutes to Vigo: "Cando petan na porta pola noite" by Xabier P. Docampo.

It’s a collection of popular horror stories, handed down orally, and put on paper for the first time and narrated by the author.

They’re those that his father told him as a child and which were an integral part of the customs and traditions of the time.

As it happens with all oral stories, they’re always in evolution and, therefore, subject to multiple variation that alters history and meaning. This was the author's main purpose, to stop the alteration of the stories told to him.

Three stories, different Galician places, protagonists and plots. Stories that get you and, if you’re forced to stop, you can’t wait to keep reading.

I’m not here to spoil the story for you or to advise you to read it, but to make a small confession: "if it came back to me again, I would happily read it"

By Pierluigi Cavallo
