Jorge Eliecer Gaitán. Who he was?

orge Eliécer Gaitán was a very important man in Colombia a long time ago. He was a leader who wanted to help poor people and make life better for everyone. He believed that all Colombians — no matter how much money they had — should be treated fairly.

Gaitán was a lawyer and later became a politician. He was a great speaker — when he talked, people really listened! Many Colombians loved him because he defended workers and wanted to fix problems like poverty and unfair treatment.

But sadly, something very bad happened. In 1948, Gaitán was killed in Bogotá. When people found out, they got really angry and very sad. There were protests and chaos in the streets — this moment in history is called "El Bogotazo."

His death changed Colombia's history and made many people realize how important peace and justice are.

"La Violencia" Period

After Gaitán was killed in 1948, many people in Bogotá were so angry and sad that they went out into the streets. They broke windows, burned buildings, and fought. This huge explosion of violence is called El Bogotazo.

But that was just the beginning.

After that day, the violence spread across almost the whole country. People from the two political parties — the Liberals and the Conservatives — kept fighting in towns and villages. Families had to leave their homes because it wasn’t safe anymore.

This time became one of the darkest and saddest in Colombia's history, and it’s called "La Violencia" — which means "The Violence". It lasted for many years and caused a lot of pain. Sadly, many people died, and peace was very hard to find.
