How do schools today prepare students for global citizenship within biology and other group 4 subjects?

I don't think that the average American school does enough to prepare students for global citizenship. While most schools require a certain number of community service hours for students to be able to graduate, this often doesn't translate beyond thinking of your own community needs. I feel that schools could benefit from building connections with schools in other countries through video chats or online tools like the IB workshop uses.

How can you help your students understand the importance of international understanding as it relates to your course?

I believe that I can do much more to help students understand international-mindedness in my classroom. I begin my class with an activity around the nature of science and bioethics. This year, I would like to highlight the contributions of scientists in the international community and focus on developing classroom goals around collaboration and communicating information. As far as topics, climate change and environmental issues are a global issue that I want to incorporate more into my curriculum. In the past, I have had students read and debate the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement. I want to do more to emphasize how other countries contribute to these agreements and are affected by climate change.

What are the ways in which the texts, topics, or ideas in your classroom have benefited from contributions from other communities, cultures, and nationalities?/What activities have you carried out in your class that have knowingly or unknowingly highlighted or celebrated international-mindedness?

In my last teaching job, I worked primarily with recent immigrants and refugees from Central American countries. I would often ask students to research their own countries for projects about ecology, biomes, and endangered species. This would happen in addition to field trips to local parks to assess similarities and differences between environments. I also asked students to create a public service announcement to build awareness around the symptoms and mechanisms of the Zika Virus. We would read about circumstances that contributed to Zika Virus running rampant in impoverished countries. An example infographic can be seen below.

International-mindedness means thinking about issues from an intersectional and global perspective. This means that a person should think about the different lived experiences of the people both inside and out of their own identities and locations. It also means being collaborative and working in service of the greater good for the global community.
