They believed that after they died, an afterlife started.
They placed the dead body in the coffin made of gold. They decorated the body with a lot gold, diamond and other gemstones.
Egyptians believed that the afterlife would be much like the life on Earth, so the soul would want use of its body in eternity. That's why Egyptians made an art out of mummification, or the preservation of the dead. The process of embalming took great skill and required many steps. What follows is a crash course on Egyptian embalming.

The body was wrapped in several layers of fine linen; and various body parts receive particular attention.

In the article, "How and why the Egyptians made their mummies", the author examines the techniques and the culture of Ancient Egypt. They believed that an afterlife started after death so they did a long process of mummification, wrapping the body, oiling the body and decorating the body with gem stones. They also made confusing pyramids to trick the tomb raiders. They had a lot of great techniques that they made all because of their religion. The mummies were usually made for the royal family members. They decorated the mummies with a lot of gem stones because they thought that the after life would be similar to the life on the Earth.
