I completely understand where your dad is coming from in the place of not being able to stick up for himself. I feel as if you should encourage your dad by helping him fill his cup and showing him as a child what to expect in a relationship. You can encourage your mom to respect him by speaking up for him or counterreacting something she says. If she comes up with an idea that’s his, tell her, well thats an intelligent idea from dad. I think it’s important to make your dad feel valued and heard Another parties support might give him the one up to speak up! :) As well as showing him how to set boundaries!

My first thoughts are:

1) Does your mom realize you feel this way? If not, you need to have an open and honest conversation about the way you feel. Perhaps your mom is unaware of her disrespectful attitude.

2) Does your dad know how you feel? Being assertive does not come naturally to everyone, but with your encouragement and support your dads voice can be heard. Have a conversation with your dad explaining the way you are perceiving the interactions between your parents.

3) After engaging in the one-on-one conversations, take some time to process what you have learned. If your concerns have not been alleviated, and even if they have, it is would be useful engaging in meaningful family discussions.

I'm not sure how close you are to them, but if you bring it up directly, they could feel like you're butting in. If it were me, I'd ask "mom/dad, what marriage or dating advice do you have for me? How can I trust and respect in a relationship?" ect.

Hi! I went through the same thing with my previous partner. It went on for seven months. From experience, I suggest you guys have a heart to heart conversation and see where that goes. BUT if no needs are being met, I highly suggest going separate ways. Love isn’t enough! Respect, communication, trust are all key components! Also, if it’s only an issue when you’re doing it to him then RUN!!! As time goes on it becomes a never ending cycle. There is a always new chapter to come & some experiences serve for a purpose. You’re entitled to do what you’d like. From experience with my previous partner, he ended up leaving me in the end despite my efforts. We didn’t meet eye to eye and after a while it was too much! I wish you the best!!!!!! I hope you prosper.

Taking mini-breaks and re-evaluating the situation is a mature and healthy response to any relationship issues that you and your partner are experiencing, but do not ignore the underlying issues that are causing the arguments. Communication is one of the keys to having healthy, long-term relationships. You and your partner need to engage in meaningful conversations about the "little things" that are happening. Lastly, the decision regarding whether the relationship should continue needs to made by you and your partner.

I honestly think that if you guys keep having problems even after you guys take a break from each other then y'all should probably go your separate ways. I know y'all love each other but if there's no communication that leads to you guys better understanding one another then moving on, without having another problem occur soon after then maybe its best to just focus on yourselves separately.

Zanetah Sasser, LPC

Project Director, Behavioral Health Grant

We are all experiencing varying degrees of stress, and it can come out in many different ways. The best we can do is try to create a positive environment that benefits us all. Unfortunately, we can’t control those around us, we can only control ourselves. We can control our attitudes, our language, and how we interact. When we leave stressful environments, it's important to implement good self-care to help us feel balanced. That may look like a 10 minute walk after class, listening to your favorite music and/or podcast on your way to class, reading positive affirmations, or even connecting with a trusted friend.

*Disclaimer: This response is for informational purposes only.
