When the British established their dominance in India, they took a lot of things from the Indians. One of those things is spices. India is extremely rich in spices, such as pepper, cloves, and cinnamon. Spices were a really high target for the British because spices could help slow down food spoilage, making them extremely valuable for the British during sea voyages and without a fridge. Spices can also add a better taste to uninteresting food, which can make the food more pleasant to eat. Another material the British took from the Indians was silk. During that time, silk was an extremely precious resource. This is because everything that was considered fashionable at that time like dresses and ribbons could be easily made with silk. Another material that the British wanted was gold. Gold is an extremely precious mineral because of how scarce it is. Gold also truly gained its value in the 1800s when countries made a gold standard. The gold standard made gold the only metal that can be bought with paper money.

Significance Of Resource

Spices are extremely important and valuable because they can slow down the food's rotting process, which can help preserve the food without a refrigerator. This is crucial to people at that time because there was no other way for them to keep the food fresh for a long time. This is also extremely important for the kingdom itself because this is the only way to keep the food fresh during long sea voyages, which is something that the kingdom had been focusing on the most. Another example of the importance of spices is that during that time, the British had been just going around and fighting other countries or tribes to extend their country’s power. Since there was no fridge at that time, some of their food was salted so that they could last a longer period of time, long enough to feed the soldiers. Besides its importance as an item, spices can also be sold to other countries for money, they can also be used to trade with other countries for other valuable items.

Silk is also extremely important because of its ability to be sewed and turned into gorgeous clothes. These silk-made clothes were considered luxurious, especially the patterned silk velvet. It was considered to be the most expensive and prestigious of all woven textiles. As time went on, these clothes became a symbol of wealth and power, for example, all of the royal families during that time wore those types of silk clothes. Silk is considered extremely valuable because it’s a limited resource. Silk is taken from the cocoons of silkworms, which can make the production limited due to some natural or human-caused factors, and by reselling the silk itself or just selling the silk-made clothes, the Britains can earn a lot of money by doing so.

Gold is also another resource that is considered to be extremely valuable at that time. This is because of the chemical characteristics of gold. Gold doesn’t rush or tarnish. It’s also mailable, meaning that it’s very easy to transport gold-made coins or jewelry. Gold also has a special way of collecting light and reflecting that light to us which makes it shiny and looks more precious. Gold has always been considered valuable, meaning that it’s very unlikely for it to go down, which also means that gold will always be valuable and will always be able to a metal to be used to trade with other countries for more money, or just simply be used as a jewelry.

Though India currently has a lot of economic value, ranking 5th largest in the world, it’s very unlikely that the British will attack India for its resources as they did a few hundred years ago for a few reasons. First of all, the British had formed a strategic relationship with India. Meaning that these two countries are pretty much allied with each other. Indians are also currently working with the British to promote defense security, economy, and people-to-people ties. With this relationship that has been revealed to the public, it’s hard for them to declare war on each other if there aren’t any reasons to do so besides taking each other’s valuables. It’s hard because countries usually care a lot about their reputations to the public, and if they declare war on each other now, then to the public, this will be treated as an example of betrayal which will not only worsen their reputation to the public but also ruin all of their future partnerships. Second of all, it was too much of a risk for the British to attack India, because India actually had a better military power than the British as far as the public knows. India currently ranks 4th in the military power leaderboard with a power index of 0.1025, while the British ranks 5th in the military power leaderboard with a power index of 0.1435. Though the British are allied with a lot of super power countries, so is India, and I don’t think that the British will be risking it, because the result of that war will really depend on who the United States, Russia, and China decide to help between the British and the Indians.

On New Year’s Eve in 1600, Queen Elizabeth the First signed a Royal Charter and granted the permission to a group of adventurers merchants, known today as the East Indians, to trade at other places. This is the company that started the war of the British taking over India. However, at that time, the leaders of the group weren’t even interested in trading directly with the Indian power. They first started competing against the Dutch, French, and Portuguese, in the East Indies. After a time, the East India Company was driven out of the East Indies and changed its target to the Indian subcontinent. After a while in 1640, a company representative was able to get a piece of land in Southern India. And on this land, is when everything started. They constructed Fort Saint-George on this land. The Britsh also built Surat in 1612, Bombay in 1638, Madras in 1639, Vizagapatam in 1682, and Calcutta in 1690. During 1748, the company benefited greatly from the British Navy which allowed them to import more and more then to India than any of the other competitors. Under the command of Robert Clive, the East Indian Company was able to defeat both the Bengals and their French allies at the battle of Plassy during the Seven Year War. This victory, by the 1760s, allowed the British to gain much more control of the Indian Subcontinent through direct possession. The British then advanced into the Indian heartland, they encountered severe resistance from places that had no interest in doing trade or business with the British. Finally, in 1858, the British took control of the entire Indian subcontinent and kept on ruling it until 1947.

The Seven Years' War, lasting from 1756 to 1763, was a global conflict that involved a lot of the European superpowers and their colonial empires. This war was often regarded as the first “world war”, though it’s not, due to its widespread geographical scope and involvement of multiple countries from different continents. The origin of the war would have to be traced back to the 1740s.

In Europe, the conflict primarily revolved around the struggle for dominance between two powerful coalitions, the British-led coalition known as the “Great Britain and Prussia Alliance” and the French-led coalition, which included Austria, Russia, Spain, and Sweden. The primary theaters of war were Central Europe, where Russia fought with Prussia and Sweden. However, the war’s influence extended far beyond Europe. The territorial dispute sparked conflicts in North America, the Caribbean, and India. In North America, the war is often referred to as the French and Indian War, where the British and the French, with their Native American allies (they favored the French more) fought against each other for control of trading and territorial expansion. In the Caribbean, naval battles were common as the British and French troops vied for control of the sugar-producing colonies. The British gained the upper hand in theater and secured several victories against the French. Similarly, in India, the battle mainly revolves around the British and the French forces, including their Indian allies, for control of valuable and several trading spots. The British East Indian Company emerged as a dominant force in the region, establishing British supremacy over the French.

Indian leaders initially attempted to negotiate with the British through diplomatic channels to protect their own trading benefits and their control over the land. However, all of their efforts were in vain as the British got more control over the subcontinent. The British refused to negotiate with the Indian leaders as they almost completely took over the Indian subcontinent. This is not the only thing that the Indians tried. Various Indian kingdoms and rulers fought back against the British expansion in the subcontinent through military resistance. Some of the most famous kingdoms that resisted the British were the Marathas, Tipu Sultan, and the Sikh Empire. However, the resistance movements lacked a lot of leadership against the British, making them extremely vulnerable to the British army.

The way that the Indians still tried to negotiate with the British when the British took a lot of control over the subcontinent was not the smartest choice, because there was simply no way that the British could possibly stop the invasion of the Indian subcontinent when they were very close of taking over the Indian subcontinent. The way they tried to fight back was a lot smarter than trying to negotiate, however, they lacked a lot of leadership, meaning that they didn’t really have a leader to lead the army against the British. If they had someone who can efficiently lead the army against the British, the war might be able to have a different result.
