This goes back to the lesson Eddie learned from the second person he met in heaven from his captain about learning how to forgive people. Eddie is forgiving his father for mistreating him growing up and understanding the things his father had to go through. Then seeing his father forgive his close friend and saving his life after assaulting his mother and his dad first having intentions to hurt his friend but saved him because of how close they are and because of "loyalty". Eddie is staying loyal to his father and forgiving him for the past.

Eddie is starting to learn more about his father and the reason behind his fathers death. He learned that his father had walked in on his good friend Mickey Shea assaulting his mother and he chased him down ruby pier where Mickey fell into the water and almost drowned but got saved by his father. His father being loyal to his close friends and family kept him from saving him and reminds him of the people he has. Eddie does the same with the people at the pier always helping people and before he lost his family it was always for them.

This shows the signs of loyalty Ruby was telling Eddie about when they seen his father save his bum friend from drowning. Eddie still shows love and respect for his father. That shows the bond and loyalty a son has with his father even though they aren't close and haven't spoken to each other. Eddie still has a little bit of love for his father even after his dad was acting like a "d" word.

Eddie asked Ruby why he is meeting her in heaven and how they have relations together. She reminds Eddie about the first lesson he learned from the first person he met in heaven the "Purple man" about how all people are connected to each other and they all have impacts on each other. In some way for the people behind them and the others in the future. Without her marriage with Emile and having the wedding at the pier he wouldn't have worked at the pier.

The captain teaches Eddie about the loyalty he has with his soldiers and how he is a man of words when he says no one left behind. Eddie doesn't understand why he feels that way and why he saved Eddie's life when he wanted to go into that fire.

The captain explains to Eddie that it wasn't his time to die and that he couldn't end there .His captain tells him that he lost something but gains his promise to be fulfilled that no one is left behind and Eddie still lives.

He tells him how they both can't see the beauty in the same thing but it is what he love in his life. His heaven is a reflection of himself and the life he lived. Dominguez and the attorney were looking for Eddie's bank statements or insurance policies and they found out that Eddie doesn't have much in his house. He has a bland house with not that much in his house and everything is organized. As the attorney is searching he finds a leather box and opens it and thinks he found junk but it is a piece of people in his life. He is keeping items that were from his loved ones the suit and Chinese menu from his wedding, the deck of playing cards from his father, the polaroid of himself on his birthday and his medal from the army. This shows he still has love for all these people and he keeps items that represent them all.

Eddie explains to Tala that he thinks he hasn't done anything big or important in his life and just worked at the pier for all of his life. She tells him that he is a maintenance worker for the pier but he has more worth than that. She tells him how he is important to the children at Ruby pier and he makes them feel safe. She doesn't even know Eddie but she still feels safe around him even thought he's the reason she died.

Throughout the entire book Eddie has worried that if he saved the little girl he sacrificed his life for because he felt a pair of hands as he died. Tala explains to him that he didn't pull her away but he pushed her out of the way. He did save her and those hands he felt were actually Tala's hands and she was bringing him to heaven.

Eddie is devastated after finding out that he is the reason the blue man is dead. He is upset and is ready to pay his consequences for his actions. The blue man explains to Eddie that his death is not his fault and that it meant something. He says how they are meeting up in heaven so that Eddie can learn more about life.

He was fidgeting during the ceremony and didn't know he was the reason for the funeral. The blue man tells Eddie that he did it for a reason and it reflects of the lesson he learns from the second person from heaven.
