Remake of Victor of Aveyron by Richelle Viado

"...He is unusual to our food, selecting his nourishment by smell but at the same time indifferent to fragrant or foul odors: lying flat on the ground to drink; tearing garments placed upon him and trying to constantly escape; walking often on all fours; fighting with his teeth; giving few marks of intelligence; having no articulate language even devoid of the faculty of speech. It was later discovered that the boy's hearing was insensitive to loud noises and to music; yet he readily heard the fall of a nut. His sense of touch was likewise deficient. As to sight, his eyes constantly wandered and could not be fixed on object."
Bonaterre (1798)

How do you think would the view and treatment of Victor be different if he was discovered...

during the era of extermination?
during the era of ridicule?
during the era of asylum?
during the early beginnings of special education?
in the 1900s?
during the present time?

ANSWER:
From the word itself, one might deduce that persons with impairments are criticized for their appearances and talents in this era. They were regarded as fools, exploited for entertainment, and executed someplace. Victor might wind up as a servant or someone who is governed by the royalties if he lived in this era.

ANSWER:
People believed that disability was a punishment from the gods, that it was a bad or evil sign, and that "Individual is what he is, now and forever," according to R.C. Scheerenberger's book, and that mentally retarded people had no place in Classical Greek society. Therefore, I assumed that if Victor lived during this time, the worst possible treatment would be chaining him, leaving him on hills to die, and throwing him into the sea.

ANSWER:
The belief in this era is that "once crippled, always disabled," however unlike the previous two eras, Victor would most likely be recognized by the Catholic Church as wards of the state in this scenario. Although Victor would not be able to receive an education, he would be able to receive decent treatment.

ANSWER:
An in-depth and profound understanding of human nature emerged during the 17th and 18th century. Some noteworthy people who began to apply a scientific approach to the status of people with disabilities include Maria Montessori, Eduard Seguin, and Ovide Decroly. Victor has lived his existence in this era, and JeanMarc Gaspard Itard has studied and watched his condition, assisting him in becoming civilized.

ANSWER:
The medical paradigm and institutional care emerged in the early 1900s. Furthermore, classrooms or schools for the mentally or cognitively challenged, the blind, the deaf, and others are being established. If Victor lived in this era, he might be able to get enough help, medication, and education to learn how to adapt to his circumstances and the people around him, which would eventually help him figure out what his illness is and how to conquer it.

ANSWER:
There would be a significant difference if Victor lived today because there has been a movement in understanding of disability from a condition of "abnormality" to a case of "human diversity" with equal rights and advantages. The majority of people will accept, respect, and value him. Furthermore, there are a slew of laws and procedures in place to safeguard and preserve his rights and safety. Not only that, but there would be a facility and a specially planned instruction program to assist and support him in meeting the intellectual, social, emotional, and vocational needs of disabled pupils.
