Explain the barriers you will be exploring within the poems and the relationships in Gatsby in which explore these barriers.

Unobtainable love | Who so list to hount I knowe where is an hynde ‘Sithens in a nett I seke to hold the wynde’  | ‘Gatsby believed in the green light’-  p115 –Symbolic of an unobtainable and unreachable dream, his hope continues on.
Time | The scrutiny ‘like skilful mineralists that sound/ for treasure in un-plowed ground’ | ‘so we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past’ –p115
Religion | The Garden of Love‘Thou shalt not’- 3 sharp stresses, taken from the 10 commandments. 

Potential barriers: marriage, obsession, inability to commit to one person, Church restricting freedoms, death. 

Obsession and death: Whoso List to Hunt demonstrates obsession through the action of a physical chase. Woman referred to could be Anne Boleyn. Wyatt was locked up in the Tower of London.  Petrarchan sonnet  

Obsession can be seen through Gatsby’s desire to be with Daisy and his tracking of her over the years. Newspaper clippings, the parties, buying the house across from Daisy’s. The Green light shows his obsession and desire. Narrative voice suggests that we should feel sympathy for Gatsby rather than for Daisy “They retreated back into their money.” 

Death can be seen in Remember: Wanting to be remembered after death, not wanting to go away, Myrtles death a barrier to life but not to love as Tom would never divorce Daisy due to class status and issues. Gatsby’s death can also be seen as a relief rather than a barrier as Daisy and Gatsby would never have been able to have a relationship with each other. 

Gatsby- Tom’s need to be with different women shows he has no preference in one. He cannot show true love as he dedicates it to many. As Myrtle are the complete opposite to Daisy 

A02- ‘as if the nerves of her body were continually smouldering.’- Simile shows her sexual desire as almost visible it’s that potent. The fact that it never stops can suggest that her desire for infidelity is infection. She can be seen as the literary foil to Daisy who is described as refined.

A03- Typical for an upper class man to have an affair as they were often seen as bored and lower class women wanted to get away. 

A04- The scrutiny. The fact he tries the search for other virgins. ‘For treasures in unploughed-up ground.’ Metaphorical meaning of looking for virginity. Ironic since he seems to ‘treasure’ virginity in woman but doesn’t show it respect of waiting after marriage, which most people would follow as it is what religion dictates. (A03)

A05-Lies to deceive a woman ‘twas last night I swore to thee’ As if making a promise is meaningless to this woman. The rhyme scheme in the first stanza places the mention of vows between the rhymes to represent the lie.
