I have seen people with Cleft plates, and finding out while they are pregnant that their kid has it. I know it affects speech, but some people have surgery to try and reverse it. I think it is cool how they can get speech therapy to help as well!

-You can use microphones to help with speech disorders. (Kind of neat, wondering how that would work.)

-There is a specific assessment for students who do not speak English as their first language.

-Surgery is an option for treatment. I wouldn't have thought this was an option, especially for kids.

On Friday my friends and I surprised our friend for her 25th birthday with a surprise party! We went to her house and set up a party and waited for her after she had rehearsal. She was so surprised and excited, it was a blast!

One thing that surprised me is using microphones and voice rest methods to treat speech disorders. Usually methods like using a microphone, drinking water, taking breaks and resting your voice is used in performers to rest their vocals so they sound their best. I never thought about using these techniques to treat speech disorders.

One thing that stood out to me was the development of speech and language. One of my friends has a speech impediment and had to do speech therapy for years. From what I remember, her impairment was like dyslexia, but she didn't have the right sounds and letters to use for certain words. Funny enough, she's going into speech therapy now to help those with similar issues as her!

Something good that happened this week is that the Holly High School marching band came in first place at the competition they attended. I am the color guard coach, and my daughter is a freshman on the team. One more week, and I can not wait for marching season to be over!

One thing that stood out to me is how many words kids know. I know it's a lot, but when seeing it on paper like that, it just shows how fast they pick things up and how quickly their brains make the connection to things. Also, at the end, when it talked about how to help, peer therapy was mentioned, and I really liked that. I think peer anything is helpful to everyone.

One good thing that happened to me this week is the fact I was able to go on vacation with my girlfriend to the UP for five nights. We had a very nice time exploring that part of the state with beautiful fall colors. We went on a mine tour, climbed a mountain to see the sunset, and ate a lot of really good food. It was a great break, and have been beaming since we got back last night. It had been a long time since I was able to go there, and even better to share it with someone I cherish.

I found it interesting that this disability has two sub categories with some being physical and some being neurological. I was very intrigued to see how these differences present themselves, and how they could be caused.

I think the thing that stood out the most to me was that cleft palate can be a part of speech disorders. It makes perfect sense, but I don't think I've ever interacted with someone who hasn't had some level of corrective surgery, so I never really put together how much it can affect someone.
