Elder abuse, which encompasses everything from passive neglect and physical abuse to sexual and emotional abuse, affects roughly nine percent of individuals in the United States who are over the age of 60. Approximately 2.1 million cases of elder abuse are reported every year, but experts believe only 1 in 14 cases are reported to authorities. This under-reporting means that elder abuse may affect as many as five million elderly individuals in America, if not more.

To make matters worse, most cases of elder abuse are perpetrated by family members. Roughly 66 percent of all reported cases were perpetrated by spouses or adult children. Meanwhile, around 36 percent of nursing homes in the US have violated elder abuse laws, while over 90 percent of nursing homes lack enough staff members to properly care for patients. This may play a role in the fact that nearly 60 percent of all reported elder abuse cases involve neglect.

The prevalence of elder abuse and the lack of preparedness at nursing homes is particularly concerning considering the fact that the elderly population is growing. In 2010, over 13 percent of the country’s population were at least 65 years old.
