This song is an example of having a singer as the speaker, Katim Mohager. Though the video for this song solely focused on a woman there isn't any background information relating her to the lyrics. Researching the background of this song, it has no occasion but was featured in the video game Grand Theft Auto V, which boosted its popularity. The Chain Gang of 1974 created by Mohager was an indie electronic inspired by shoegaze and rock bands in the 1990s. It has five studio albums that include Sleepwalking. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Chain_Gang_of_1974

The audience in this song is unclear as there isn't enough information to determine who the main audience is. But this song does have strong hints that point toward a lover like a girlfriend or a wife as the audience. The purpose of this song I believe is to express how he is all messed up after being in an affair relationship and wishing it was all a dream. The main subject of this song is love or relationship.

Mohager, as the speaker, attempts to tell his lover that her love has left him miserable and dreaming. He uses the appeals of pathos and ethos in the lyrics. He also uses the appeals of pathos and ethos in the video to get the message across. In analyzing the lyrics and video, it appears that his use of appeals is effective in convincing the audience with the lyrics but the video itself can be quite confusing without the audio.

The speaker uses some pathos to express his feeling about his situation. An affair often causes feelings of rage, hurt, and mistrust, which can be difficult to overcome. His first line "State of dreaming Has left me numb" is him being in a hopeless state, he feels the loss of control within himself. The "Love, You left me miserable" chorus is self-explanatory, he is depressed by the relationship or the woman.
"Teardrops of acid rain Burning down through my veins" He is experiencing emotional pains and "Can't I just sleep for now" is him wanting to escape the pains. "Maybe we're just sleepwalking" He wants to ignore the problem and pretend it isn't happening.

"Blue eyes and wandering lips, True lies with fingertips" This line is Mohager describing the features of the woman that seduced him with her eyes, mouth, and touches. ''Hidden Tales of Forbidden Love" further connects that he's in an affair.
"Despite my fears I dance for you" is him saying he is scared of being in an affair with her but is still willing to please her.
Affairs are sweet at times but eventually will turn into a nightmare. In the second verse, "Why did God fail To improve us" he is blaming God for all the suffering. Why didn't God make him perfect so he won't make stupid choices and be spared of the pain

Mohager's lyrics in this song use pathos and ethos appeal to deliver his message to his audience, a woman, about how he felt in the relationship. The video, however, doesn't deliver the same message as effectively as the lyrics.
