Our school has a SEL curriculum that the Specials teachers implement of half days. However, given our population of students, this is not enough. We need to improve self management, awareness, etc. Sometimes, I look at the generation of students today and are completely taken back by the lack of respect they have for school, staff, and peers. Then I look at our community and realize, as a school district we have to have higher expectations for our students, but also spend extra time teaching SEL.

I'm not aware of my school using any of the programs listed in the guide. It is a great resource for me to take back to my school. It could really benefit the school as a whole. There are a lot of Tier 2 behavior plans in the general education population.

Cecilia

I think an area of improvement for my school is relationship skills among students and student-teacher relationships. I have observed many students who lack the necessary skills to build positive relationships with peers and teachers. I could help by modeling relationship building techniques and appropriate behaviors.

My school uses the "4B's." Once a month, we focus on one of the 4B's: be safe, be ready to learn, be responsible, be respectful. While this is good whole class curriculum, with it being only once a month, I think that instruction doesn't take place often enough to make an impact on children, much less children with disabilities.

Alysha

I think we need to do a better job of teaching respect and diversity. Some of my learners question when others walk or talk differently and I try to instill that everyone's different and that's just the way the world works. There's not explicit instruction on diversity and respect to one another. I think doing activities that show what diversity looks like would help. I also think with respect, it would help to narrow that into a more targeted objective.

One competency our school can work on is relationships between students. We do not really address healthy friendships or bullying until it happens. Our social worker has completed a cyber/social media training with some students, but I think we can start implementing these standards into classroom instruction.

We have a school wide behavior plan that focuses on character education. This was our first year implementing it and we had a really positive response to it. I am on the team that helped design this plan and we will continue to tweek it and use it again this year. Other than that, our school social worker and school psychologist run our groups for students who have been referred to them for specific concerns. They have done a nice job with this in the past and work with the teachers to let them know what specific things they are working on and how we can carry these skills over into the classroom.
Patti

I think my school needs to do a better job with teaching students how to handle stress. I teach at junior high and students are always stressing out because it is so different from grade school. However, they do not know how to deal with it and nobody knows they are stressed until they reach a breaking point. Next year, I would like a meditation club or a de-stress club. Students can come learn about techniques to de-stress.

We use PBIS at my school, and it is very beneficial as far as managing student's behaviors. Since I work with such a young age group, they are able to easily relate to PBIS and are able to understand how they can regulate their emotions. As an SLP, I try and just identify when a student is feeling upset, and talking through that to determine what interventions are needed.
