Before its construction, the area was a mulberry garden planted by King James I in order to breed silkworms, which never really took off, so a noble residence was built on the site. In 1761, it was purchased by King George III, who transformed the house into a royal, but not official, palace.

Buckingham Palace is compared to a city due to its grandeur and complexity. With over 775 rooms, it is a vast royal residence that houses not only members of the British royal family but also a team of staff who look after its daily operations. This includes cleaning staff, security, gardeners, cooks and more, creating an indoor community similar to a small town.

Can Royal Guards smile, speak or go to the toilet while in post?

Visitors to Buckingham Palace machines tease the royal guards in an attempt to make them smile. But their attempts are in vain. No matter how many jokes you make or how many photos you take, the royal guards' gloomy expression will not break. Although they are a popular spectacle for visitors to Britain to watch as they perform their iconic Changing of the Guard, these guards are on active service to the Queen and must conduct themselves with the highest discipline. They will not be fined, as some rumors suggest, but it is frowned upon that the guards smiled for a selfie with tourists.

The Queen's guards are so dedicated to their position that they can't even leave their post to go to the bathroom during their shift. Everyone must have very strong bladders!

Although we would be forgiven for believing that the Queen's guards took a vow of silence while on duty, they may in fact speak on some occasions. While we don't recommend provoking them, they may talk (or, more specifically, scream) if visitors get close to them or act aggressively. They are more commonly known as shouts of “make way for the Queen’s guard!” for tourists who get too close.
